Does anyone not have a smartphone by choice?

When half decent usable camera phones came along at about the 1-2 megapixel stage, I tried using an old Nokia phone for a bit. It was one of the flasgship 8000 metal phones. Even that didn't last many days before I switched back.

If I'm at the Pub etc and there's only 2-3 of us I'll make a point of not reading texts for about 15-20 minutes so even if someone keeps texting me, I'll only have the phone out 3-4 times an hour.

I don't have one at the moment due to losing it a few days ago. I won't receive another for about a week, but it already feels like I'm missing an arm or something. :o

i use mine for GPS, maps, satnav and camera. several times i've gone to new places and got lost/cant find them so i can look on the map where i am. its a godsend!

Finally succumbed and bought an iPhone 5 just before Christmas. Battery life was my main reason for delaying till then but it's no longer such an issue with this phone. I know what you mean about them being annoying though.

My argument is when is it ever THAT important to get hold of someone by other means than a phone call. Even then when would someone actually need me for a life or death situation even with a phone call.

.
Well say your parents, wife or a loved one was involved in a nasty accident their life ebbing away, well you may want to be by their side holding their hand or to say goodbye.

I bought my first smartphone nine years ago and haven't used a feature phone since. I'll give up my smartphone when you pry it from my cold, dead hands

I've had to do that task before, sitting outside intensive for days with no sleep, having said my last tearful goodbyes twice, only to see the ******* astound the doctors and come back to life.

I'm not much good at personal stuff so I don't think I'll go rushing to anyones bedside again.

They are amazing when you could be bored (on trains, waiting for stuff if your friends on a phone call) & annoying when used when people should not be bored (When sitting around with friends at the pub).

A few months back I went to London, no real planning - but purchased my tickets for collection while out, checked the times, emailed some reference pictures to a tattoo artist, memorised the route on the tube (via online sources on the tain) - used GPS navigation to get from the station to the Tattoo parlour, listened to music most of the way, read a few chapters of Game Of Thrones (kindle ap on S3 is pretty good) & kept in touch with friends/family via social media through the day & even got some good reference photos for drawing & finally watched a couple of episodes of Family Guy on the way home.

Not bad for a phone tbh (I do realise that sounds like a horrible S3 advert of some kind reading it back).

I can see your point of view but I don't agree with Bertrand Russell

If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years. - Bertrand Russell

For me it should say

"If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired the happiness of others more than they desired the happiness of themselves, we could have paradise in a few years

Better battery life? WAT? Far from it as certain Apps will connect to the interwab every so often hence battey life is not great. 1 day 23 hours according to Gsam here.

Er yes, I have one of these beauties:

And I only have to charge the battery every 10-14 days or so, and it's on 24 hours/day. Obviously it doesn't do much though! Calls and texts and that's it.

I got 2 one for work one for personal use. I rarely use them for what they can do, I dont watch films or tv on them or use the internet when im away from the home, basically just text or mainly call people on them and check the odd email.

I wouldn't have owned one was it not for the fact I won one.
However, all it gets used for is an alarm clock.

I.... haven't used a mobile phone/smart phone for a phone call in probably over 2 years (feels like 1 but honestly), mostly because I've never needed to.

I got a cheap Samsung slider phone; I can txt and phone (that's it). I have it because its small and light -
I live in London and am always wondering when X train is coming or going and how to get to x place - and my wife is tired of me calling and asking her :) ... so may end up getting one eventually.

i have not owned a mobile for over 6 years i just got so peeved as i could not take the stupid pointless texts friends and family would send me all time. if they need me they ring my land line if im not there im all ready busy have no twitter or FB either misses on the other hand uses all that stuff and has some sort of samsung smart phone i think its one of the galaxy's all mobiles in my house hold are on silent mode while in doors.

I have a cheapo pay as you go. Solid phone and I don't worry that I might lose it. The worst thing is when you are having a meal with friends and people get their phones out at the table while people are eating. Find it rude.

These are brilliant. I purchased one of these (unlocked) and a pay as you go sim, as work demmands that they have a contact number for us! I dont carry it about, but just leave it switched on in a drawer somewhere and just check it every few days to make sure no one wants me (rare as I work nights).

So far I think its coming up to 2 weeks and still loads of battery life left. Amazing for the tenner I paid for it :D

I'm on my second smart phone and really like them. I don't use facebook or twitter, though I do have accounts. This is the main thing I see people doing with their smartphones when out and about.

Mine is used for, in order of priority:

Calls
Texts
Sat Nav
Podcasts
Audiobooks

I could live without it but why ignore the benefits of what is a really handy piece of modern technology? Like any tool it is there to be used, misused or obsessed over. Mine spends most of its time in my pocket and I pick up my texts and voicemails when I can be bothered to check. People who know me don't expect an immediate response, but know I will get back to them when I can.
