How not to respond to a blue light vehicle!

One thing that confuses me is why, when an Ambulance is coming in the other direction and their side of the road is clear, why do cars on the OTHER side of the road pull over for no reason?

Good practice tbh...i've seen vehicles with blues and twos going stuck behind numptys that don't notice them!!!
:)

You could literally have a bus alongside that ambulance?

In the space in that picture, you could fit a bus alongside the ambulance AND those two cars...

Yeah this was my thought process.

Yes, and instead of the bus there is two cars  If they both stayed on the road (which I do say in my post they could have done) there would be very little room, and smaller when you add in the speed of the ambulance.

The road is pretty wide because of the cycle lane. In fact in the video you could actually fit a whole car betwen the Toyota in front, and the ambulance.. with the space left between it and the car to its left, there is plenty of space even if both vehicles stayed off the kerb.

bublé fan are we?

Lol, Radio 1. Didn't even know who was being played!

You don't want to drive off a full curb if you don't have to. Also, your video doesn't confirm this but I imagine there were no pedestrians about. An ambulance shouldn't have to stop you moving.

And looking again there isn't that much room. Certainly one car would need to get on a curb, both being just on the side of the road would make the gap quite small at the speed of that ambulance.

This isn't the lolworthy bit. It's that the cars driving the other way are fully driving along the pavement at c. 15-20mph! A pedestrian steps out of one of those driveways and bad things will happen. Plus the width of the road means all they need to do is pull over to the side of the road, there's space to pass them.
Driving along the pavement is, in my opinion, liable to be prosecuted with a dangerous driving offence (and far worse than that bus lane driving we saw a week or so ago).
I'd do the same, drive on to another dropped section! replacing suspension components because your dropping from high kerbs won't be cheap!
There's a difference between driving along a raised kerb to a dropped section, and just driving along the pavement for 30-40m, which is what the guys in the video did! :p
:) LOL

Why am I imaging the OP is one of those that acts as if you've pee'd on his grandmothers grave if you say the words "ATM Machine".. ;)
I'm confused - is this a reference I'm not getting?
Geez, lighten up everyone!

Video gave me a giggle. A small one, but a giggle all the same.

Edit; music in car is fail.
Lol, Radio 1 as above ;)

Any links to a source pointing out this best practice?

From what I can see its something you dont need to do, if the road ahead of the emergency vehicle is clear, why do people traveling in the other direction behave abnormally.

Just continue driving, you are creating more hazards and increasing the chance of an accident by diving for the hedgerow when you clearly dont need to.

Doesn't look terrible really. My brother in law is blue light trained and does first responder duties. He's had people literally emergency stop in front of him on dual carridgeways/motorways in the fast lane when he has been approaching at speed... That would be more thread worthy. His view is that he would prefer people to just carry on driving 'normally' and move out of the way when safe, he will make whatever adjustments he needs to in order to continue to make progress.

Seems normal to me. Would you expect people to come to a full stop, handbrake and engine off?

All assuming the pavement is empty for the next 20m or so, then I'd probably do the same.

My reaction.

I honestly wouldn't contemplate driving on (at what looked like a fair pace) with 90% of my car up on the curb but it looks like I'm in the minority!

?? why would I possibly expect that?
What I would expect is cars not driving along the pavement for some distance when the road is plenty wide enough anyway! If the pavement is empty and there is a traffic jam on the road, would you drive on the pavement? If not, why not? And if not, please explain how this is different from driving on the pavement while an emergency vehicle drives past, when the road is wide enough for three cars?

There I was thinking I was going crazy :p
