Insurance Dilemma - to be honest or not?

My car insurance has been up for renewal and I have just had to have one policy cancelled due to they do not insure my area of work (too high risk).

I live in Leicester, but work in a military base near London. Because I commute and live on the base, they are classing that as my main place of residence.

Problem is that it is going to cost me a fortune (£500 more) and am having problems getting it insured in the 1st place.

So my dilemma is this. Pay out of the arse for it (if I can get it) and be honest? Or say I am living at home and commute to work? I am at home 9 days a month, which I know is under 50% but what the hell?!

My honesty caused my car to not be insured as of tomorrow. I am in one of the most secure camps in the UK - nothing will happen to my car! Its annoying :(

Any help would be appreciated.

Have an accident and find that you are not covered and then decide whether it was worth lying or not?

Particularly if someone gets hurt or the Police are involved and you have to give your details in any investigation.

Remember, whatever you decide to do, that if you are caught the consequences can be far more severe than a few hundred quid out of pocket.

Sounds like the solution is to find an insurer that doesn't use the same rules for determining place of residence. Ultimately it's down to you and how risk adverse you have to be. Having an insurance company avoid a policy could be disastrous for you. Alternatively, you may never have an accident or an insurer might overlook the details.

An irritating problem, that I appreciate.

If you are planning on committing insurance fraud, posting about it on the internet is almost certainly a bad idea, come to think of it, the whole thing is a bad idea from start to finish.

Students always put their home address down rather than term time address, I don't see this as being any different.

What do you class as your "home", where does your mail get sent to for example?

Honesty is the best policy.

You are absolutely right - I will go down this route.

I have always been honest with anything regarding insurance, quite ashamed of myself for potentially committing fraud. I despise these people! Lots of bad karma today for Bengaboy :(

My mail goes to Leicester, and that is classed as my home - the base is just where I work, but because the car is there for the majority of the time, thats where they class my "home".

Your Home is Leicester.

So that is where you put as your Home. Who cares where your car is when you work?

There is HOME and WORK.

Tell them HOME is Leicester

You should be honest. If you've lied and you have a small claim, you'll probably get away with it, but if it's a big claim, the insurance company will be looking for any excuse not to pay. As the policy would not be valid, you would be guilty of driving with no insurance.

But have you tried shopping around to find a more understanding insurance company? A quick google suggests there are quite a few specialist insurance companies for people in or working with the military.

These companies are unlikely to be on price comparison sites, so you should get quotes from them directly.

Tell them HOME is Leicester

Because most insurers dont ask that. they ask where the car is predominantly stored...

I am in the same boat as you and I class my house as home, not my workplace despite staying there 5 days a week. It's never been a problem for me.

Though I do put my work address as the place of storage but it doesn't usually affect the price.
