Lauryn Hill jailed for tax evasion

"I happily pick cotton all day long on the plantation and have never seen the master's whip". Try NOT paying them. If you dont work for free and give the proceeds to the government they will:

A. Lock you up in prison.
B. Shoot you, then lock you up in prison.
C. Shoot you to death.

So you think paying taxes is the equivalent of slavery? Seriously?

You also avoided the question earlier as to what your alternative would be then, just let them off?

Why does this keep coming up? Celebrities owing loads of tax not knowing they owed it. I swear its like the companies are setting them up or something(not telling or helping them).

And the tax men and media obsess over individuals like this when its crumbs compared to the billions that corporations get away with.

Shes a racist and once said "I'd rather die than have a white person buy one of my albums."

But that isn't really what happened in this case - or indeed any cases of people being unable to pay their taxes here or in the US. First off, she had 10 years or so to file her returns and pay the taxes due. If, at any point, she found herself to be unable to meet her liabilities she could have approached the IRS to discuss paying in instalments. She could even have attempted to reach a compromise arrangement. Instead, it would seem she has simply refused to file correct returns and pay the tax right up to the point when her legal team has realised she is likely to incur a custodial sentence when suddenly the funds become available and she settled the liability.

The fact is she was convicted of tax evasion. That doesn't mean that she simply did not pay her taxes. Or even that she refused to pay her taxes. Or that she took a stance on grounds of morality. It means that she deliberately and criminally attempted to hide her true tax liability in order to retain more of earnings than should have been the case.

Amazon, starbucks, google, etc all do it. I think Amazon UK only paid £1 million in UK tax. Fair play to them I say. Meanwhile the plebs are paying VAT and everything else. But when a pleb tries to avoid it they get locked up.

If you don't like it, you're welcome to go try to claim an island somewhere and create your own country with no tax system.

You do know the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion don't you?

Also, don't quite think you can describe a multi-millionaire like Hill as a 'pleb'.

That is like saying if you come on to my land I can rob half your money. But if you complain Ill just say, well you are free to go to someone elses land and rob other people there. Sure makes loads of sense...

IF the mafia is in town and they are extorting money from everyone for "protection" and for "other services" then if someone in the neighborhood manages to find a way to pay less to the mafia. Is it then wise to say that the person should pay as much as everyone else? instead you should be calling for everyone else to pay less.

The government should be cut to about 1/10th of it's current size for a start and they should only be able to spend tax money on their constitutional obligations which is basically just raising a military, minting currency and maintaining ports/roads and the like.

Then if you don't pay your taxes you get your passport revoked and a one way ticket to a country of your choice.

Oh shut up groen, if you can't phathom why society benefits from having a tax based social security system then you are a moron and comparing it with theft and mafia extortion just makes you look even more like a wind up merchant.

Also, please show one rich, over taxed, person who has made their money with absolutely no help from the services that tax money supports. No tax means no roads for example, so that eliminates every company that ever need to moves anything for a start.

The organisations you mention work within the law so the IRS, courts, whatever cannot do anything about them regardless of the moral position. Hill broke the law - so should that simply be ignored?

Besides, the "well, there are worse people" argument is pretty ridiculous.

Riiiiight, so 3 months in prison is more draconian than being deported?

lol

If the government did not have a monopoly on the roads then the private sector would simply build them. Most of the roads initially were built before the government even existed. The argument that people use the roads so therefore they deserve half their money stolen at gun point is bit of a moot point because people have no choice but to use the roads because the government claims ownership over all of them. Anyway there is road tax and other licenses that (should) pay for the roads, the income tax and national insurance are not required in order to pay for the roads.

Solution: Move to middle of nowhere. Build own house, grow own food, become completely self sufficient. Have no income = don't pay any tax. Sorted.

Just don't ever get a serious illness/break any bones because you'll probably die.
