Regardless of this topic, how is this any different to the 2000s to the 90s and 80s? and all those shop stands full of celebrity magazines? now it's in technology. In the next decade somebody else will be saying the same thing as yourself and the decade after that.

Even news channels no longer feel like news channels. Feels like celebrity news, gossip, trivia channels. I think it is beyond feels now, it being it is.

Celebrities are the ones that sets trends after all.

Don't know about you but when I watch ironman, spiderman or any other superhuman characters, I want reality suspended while I completely believe in the powers of the actor I'm watching. Not thinking, oh that's angelina jolie who had her breasts removed, reminding me of cancer and feeling sorry for her. That would break the suspension of disbelief for me. If there was a comedienne you normally find funny (a rare thing) and then you saw her doing comedy after a double mastectomy, do you think you'd laugh much or just be feeling sorry for her?

I remember that lass getting her chest tattoed after having this same operation, pretty bold move and very brave to show it off.

After reconstructive surgery for Jolie, I wonder how they deal with blood supply.

It wouldn't bother me at all in either case, why would it? Quite why you'd be sat there "feeling sorry for her", I don't know. Fairly sure the last thing anyone wants or needs in these situations is pity.

hmm.

woman has breasts removes. Chance of developing cancer drops to very small levels from almost certainty. Woman then gets implants.

Traumatic, but win? sounds like a fine decision to me, as distressing as it must have been.

Don't think it would be that difficult, the decision that is. 86% chance of a nasty death from cancer reduced to 5% chance means the operation is kind of a no brainer for someone in her position, already in a stable relationship, with kids etc.. and with the resources she has....

Tough ordeal going through the operations though... and kudos to her for raising awareness too.

Breasts are a huge part of a woman's identity (no pun intended!), so it must have been one hell of a decision. (or maybe not.. who knows how she came about to deciding). I did ask early about blood supply (for skin really), if she had implants after re-constructive surgery... how would that work, given there is no tissue? Would certainly be interesting to know how the heck they would achieve that. With the breasts removed and nothing there, the skin would be against the body, hence blood supply, but with implants and very little tissue.... well, that would be exceptionally hard to do I'd imagine.

(^^ I worded that whole thing horribly, I'm not going to rewrite it)

Well yes, my mind does work in mysterious ways. Ok then, perhaps it's only me who thinks this way.

Oddly enough, I can watch old movies like back to the future and superman with no problem. I can watch the old tomb raider movies with no problem. But if it was a new movie with AJ and actually made after this operation (I know she decided to quit doing Lara ages ago anyway), then it would feel different to me. I don't really know why.

I'm glad she is raising awareness for breast cancer but I do think its important to remember that she could die from an equally horrible cancer that they can't test for yet.

She still had a 13% chance not to get it, now she has a 95% of not getting it, reducing the risk does not eliminate it.

Put it this way..

20 years ago my nan had a mastectomy because of a cancerous growth. The procedure at the time was a success.

Now unfortunately we lost her suddenly in January this year where the cancer had reoccurred in the bones without anyone knowing, but without that mastectomy we'd have lost her 20 years previous..

Like you say it's a personal decision but if you knew that a preventitive treatment would most likely significantly increase the chances of many more years with your loved ones you'd take it wouldn't you?

I don't think this would have been a pressing consideration for her.

Bad situation to be in, rather unpleasant procedure to go through... really don't see the tough decision though. Likely early death vs losing part of your identity...

If I had an 86% chance of a nasty death reduced to 5% if I chop a leg off then I'm chopping the leg off AIAEC.
