What card for 3dvision LoL?

My brother spends half his waking life on League of Legends, and we're looking at what to get him for his birthday as he never asks for much and barely got anything for Christmas. I've suggested to my parents we get him a 3d system and a slightly more powerful card (he's currently on a 5750).

Now for the monitor I'm okay choosing by myself, but I'm not sure what sort of grunt is needed to run LoL maxed out at 1080p on a 3d monitor? I take it a GTX 660 should just about be enough? I'll need to find out what PSU he has as well but in terms of raw grunt what do you guys reckon he'll need?

yes it should be - there aren't any game benchmarks kicking about that I can find, I can only find a few forum posts where people talk about needing to limit their 670 to 118FPS to prevent a game related issue caused by higher FPS and that a mid range 6*** AMD card can run it locked at 60FPS, so it doesn't sound like LoL is a particularly taxing game

Yeah it's never been hard on graphics just wasn't sure if it doesn't play ball with 3d nicely or similar, and just conscious I don't want to only scrape into acceptable performance as visual updates may come at some point or the community may shift to Dota etc. which is a little more taxing. Does a 660 Ti offer a significant boost over the 660? The 670 may be a little bit too expensive but I shall see.

When you talk about 3d are you buying the nvidia 3d vision kit? If not you maybe better with an amd card. I am pretty sure I have read around here that amd support 3d a little better when excluding nv's own expensive 3d vision kit.

again, only going by other forums, yes it does appear that 3DVision with LoL works

I suppose that if you go for the best card you can for the budget you have, it covers him for playing any other games or updates that come along

the ti seems to be around 10-20% faster than a 660, but then you are looking at about £80 more for the Ti, so about 40% more cost wise, the 670 is only a tiny bit more money and a much better performance boost, so I would either stick with the 660, or go balls out for the 670 :D
there may be some good deals on 670's soon with the release of the 770

it's a shame we don't know more about the release dates of the mid range 7** cards as it could be worth waiting for a small bump in performance at the same price, but only the 780 and 770 seem to be coming this month

I was going to go 3dvision kit. I only briefly glanced over some stuff on tridef/Hd3d and there didn't seem to be anything like the user base or documentation on it as there is on 3dvision so figured it would likely be less of a headache - if it involves any thinking my brother will just turn it off and play in 2d haha

The 660ti is too much money for what it is. I would settle on the gtx660 which is priced pretty well. You could always setup an oc profile for it which would give it a small boost.

Okay another question; are there any issues with SLI cards and 3d vision? In terms of futureproofing and if he wants to go into any other games which are a little more taxing on gpu setups then assuming it's fairly soon, being able to chuck another 660 in there would likely be ideal. Even if his PSU doesn't support it, I'd assume it's a decently powerful one that I could swap my 1100W corsair for which would be more than enough, as I don't have a hugely power hungry system at the moment.

not as a general rule - SLI works very well
there are from time to time SLI issues on new games but these are usually fixed quite quickly either by a game update or driver update

having said that, SLI is a bit of a niche product, as is 3D, so combining the 2 you are giving yourself the maximum opportunity for a experiencing a problem

I'm not aware of any significant issues currently though

power requirements on 660SLI would not be that great though, so anything above a decent 600w would be fine - the extra cost at this point will be minimal so try to include that now if you can

Yeah that's what I was thinking; there are some issues with SLI and some issues with 3dvision. If all they do is stack (so the 3dvision problems don't change and nor do the SLI problems, it's just that there are more things to go wrong) then I wouldn't mind, it's if there's some clashes where 3dvision and SLI will have a problem but neither of the individual setups would have one that I'd be wary.

It appears that LoL (that the OP's brother plays) isn't supported by TriDef.

That wouldn't be good for the OP or his brother. Nvidia do 3D very well and I am a big fan. In most cases, you have to buy the 3DVision kit but with AMD, you also have to buy the TriDef package which is far from cheap.

I was/am using 3 3D screens and happily used 2X680's to power those and 2X660's will cope easily with one screen :)
