** PRE ORDER YOUR NEXT GENERATION CONSOLE AT OVERCLOCKERS UK **

What sort of features are missing on a 50 quid bluray player?

DNLA, full Smart Hub. Most cheap players only had a few apps or so. Since some of my TV's don't have Smart Hubs. From most of the reviews I've seen most cheap Blu-Ray players were quite poor with DVD upscaling. Most didn't have optical. Some didn't have Ethernet or WiFi. Plus most of the reviews the cheap players had somewhat fairly loud disc spinning.

I personally love whisper quiet players.

All depends on the reviews. Most of the cheap players have limited file types and specific formats for DNLA. I always kept reading problems with a certain amount of MKV's.

Most if not all deleted posts so far in this thread have mentioned those places. Well, maybe not Steam.

Then that's just a case of changing the rules to suit them then if that is the reason they've deleted them. The rules in PC gaming state:

Competitors

1. Amazon and places like these etailers/retailers are fine to talk about but please do *NOT* discuss our core business products or link to them such as motherboards, cpus, mice etc.

the stuff you have mentioned is stuff that the player/unit is capable of not the actual BR drive (exception of noise) - the actual drive dosent do do all of that stuff the hardware/software in the unit does it.

i think the PS1 was £300 on launch (nearly 20 years ago),

i paid £320 december 1996 from a toy store with a giraffe as a mascot. it was with demolishim derby. i remember the day well :)

in 1992, my parents paid nearly £1k for an acorn archimedes package.

your point about technology progress reflecting price increase is both valid and invalid. with new procedures comes a reduction in technology prices. if microsoft have set an RRP of over £450 they are cutting a lot of potential customers out of the market.

of course, if you're shrewd, you'd order 5 and sell them on an auction site when the christmas demand outstrips supply ;)

competitive in the gaming market?

surely you mean pc components market?

they only have 2 items with more than 10 in stock

if console gaming is not their target market, they'd be foolish to have high stock levels.

Yes but what good is a loud PC drive when you have to have your computer running that a standalone player does better. Plus uses very little power and can be quickly carried between rooms.

.

the console is more likely to be closer to [if not more than] this price (£589 at time of post) upon launch.

thinking it will be anywhere near £300 is, shall we say.

hopeful

I would bet anyone a tenner right now that it'll be closer to £300 than £600. My personal guess is £399.99

Should go in the Xbox one thread, or the conspiracy theory forum really. :P

You may want to call him a nutjob, but it is a very real thing, some companies want to be able to detect how many people are watching something at a given time in an attempt to extract more money from them by claiming that they only hold a license for X amount of viewers and that they have exceeded it.

As far as I know, it's a very real thing that the NFL has been looking in to and wants to try and implement.

The 360/ps3 is loud when spinning discs compared to a stand alone player but they are constantly spinning the discs up reading data moving the laser from one section to another very quickly etc.

load a dvd (or for the ps3 a BR) film in a PS3/360 and they spin the disc slower and dont need do the read/seek on the disc like the do with a game and are much quieter.

I heard last night they're doing £299.99 consoles with subscription charges, or £399.99 consoles without.

Oh good, the console market is mimicking mobiles phones with contract/PAYG.

Was utterly confused why people were stating £600 and realised it had been lowered.

Either figure is a joke, not sure why someone would choose to pre order from here in preference.

Uncharacteristically not good from OcUK.

That's all extras and nice things to have. Worth paying extra for if you want but dont have those in your other gear, yes. That doesnt really make them any better at playing bluray though. to throw a different opinion in to the pot - I wouldnt waste my shiny bluray player on MKVs, i think it's somewhat a waste. I had no other way of playing them then maybe, but my pc does a grand job of that anyway.

It's worth noting that ethernet is mandatory for bd profile 2.0 (aka BD-Live). Profile 2.0/BD-Live was introduced 5 years ago, so the only players you'll find without Ethernet are probably only useful as doorstops these days :)
