Win 7 or Win 8??

I am getting a laptop that comes with Win 8 pre-installed. I am not too pleased with this from the brief look at Win 8 that I have had, I was not too impressed. Before I install all my games n programs etc, I need to get a good idea if my dislike of Windows 8 was simply because it was all new, or whether it really is just a much worse way of doing the same things, at least as far as conventional mouse/keyboard operated PC is concerned (in which case first thing I do will be to install Win 7).

Try installing StartIsBack before throwing down even more money on Windows 7. It basically makes it so you don't ever have to see any of the Metro features while still retaining the other benefits of Windows 8 like it being faster

This is the best option IMO. All the benefits of the newer OS without the start screen etc which i don't find suitable for a desktop.

It amazes me how many people are willing to throw ~3 years mainstream support down the toilet for the sake of a menu.

Because the Metro UI is a clunky, horrible, touch screen orientated mess and the Start Menu is what people have known and loved for the past 20 odd years?

Unless your original post is aimed at people having Windows 8 and downgrading to Windows 7 then I'd agree with you when there are arguably better options available.

Well you can either buy Windows 7 and lose out on remaining mainstream support, or buy Windows 8 and retrofit a Start menu. It's pretty much what you said.

Personaly i like the windows 8 beacuse is superfast, and all of that and the drivers just go to the manufacter place and see if is windows 8 ready/compatible
if its selling you got warranty and could buy it, and if thres a problems just call the manufacter

Apparently there's no aero glass in win 8? Is this coming back with 8.1? I really like the look of aero. Very superficial maybe and probably a poor reason to stay with win 7, but until 8.1 is released and reviewed, I'll be sticking with win 7.

Nope, no aero glass. It's the complete opposite of metro design principles so won't be coming back.

I use 7 at home and 8 at work. I do prefer 8 now and be installing it at home very soon.

No because Aero utilised the GPU and Windows 8 is built for battery powered touch devices with pants processors.

Of those who are stating that they prefer Windows 8, I wonder what proportion are using thier laptop/PC's purely as a multimedia, internet, gaming device and which of you actually also use your W8 computers for working on.

Having spent 1 hour or so dicking around with W8 (pre-installed on new laptop), I cant say I am liking what I see so far. Aside from the inconvenience of having to relearn all the time tested OS navigation routes that have become like instinct, W8 feels to me like a big Microsoft spider, moving ever more aggressively towards trying to get everyone entangled in its web. I may be wrong, but I bet for example small time programmers will have an increasingly hard time getting W8 to properly incorporate thier software than compared with previous versions.
