European road trip

Presuming you didn't camp what kind of money did you spent on hotels/hostels? (If you don't mind me asking)

No problem... my average hotel cost per night came out at £51. This included 3 nights at a Marriot in Prague, a Hilton in Dortmund, a Marriot in Vienna for 2 nights, a decent place in Budapest, a couple of Holiday Inn Express in Germany, the Crowne Plaza in Antwerp, a Sheraton in Dornbirn and a Hotel Ibis in Innsbruck (Ironically the most expensive hotel on the entire trip!).

Sadly an annoying additional cost on top was parking. I think I ended up spending almost £200 on hotel parking.

That's quite a bit cheaper than I thought actually. Did you book in advance or just turn up?

I chose to camp having done little research and was stunned at the price of some of the campsites. I have no idea of the average, but we seemed to be handing over ~40€ all to often at the Italian campsites. Others were a bit cheaper.

If you dont mind basic level hotels then Ibis Budget booked through Etap can be as low as £35 a night depending on what city you are staying in.

Depends when you go, there are out of season campsite schemes like campingcard and campingcheque, about 15 euros all in then. But you can still find cheap campsites in season just have to do a bit of research as a lot will be full on campsites offering much you won't take advantage of but pay for. Although Italy camping overall is expensive.

Some great photos, brings back good memories

I'm planning mine for June this year.

I've done it before with friends, but this was over 5 years ago.

What do you guys think the ideal situation is, a hotel in the city and pay for parking or a hotel on the outskirts and drive into the city?

Depends if you plan to be going out at night and having a drink. Got back from a road trip with a friend a few weeks ago. It was an awesome 5 days. We got the ferry from hull to rotterdam. Netherlands is beautiful and we stopped a few times in different places (Nijmegen was very nice).

Spent a long time in the car driving through netherlands and into north west Rhineland on the first day, finally arriving at Sundern, in Sauerland (spent two nights here), then stayed in Dortmund, had a night out and restaurant etc, stayed at the pullman hotel which was nice but a little expensive, especially the hotel bar.

I'll upload some pics below. :D

I'm going towards the city centre route, as driving around form each place, the last thing I would want to do is drive around to explore a city.

I have the following places left to source accommodation.

Reims
Strasbourg
Genoa
Montpellier
Toulouse
Limoges
Paris

Ideally as I'm going through the Loire valley it would be nice to stay in a vineyard! Is there a better site than Expedia to look for accommodation?

Some pics from my trip, don't think I've posted them before. :)

I parked on the street overnight in the center of Dijon near to the hotel, car got spat on and I saw another car drive by with the driver doing a 'shooting gun' motion towards my car. Somehow got the impression they didn't like my GB numberplate much :p

I'm going this Friday for my road trip.

As I am going to Switzerland, will I need snow chains in the boot of my car?

Been thinking about doing this for a while now. Did you guys have set hotels booked or did you just wing it? (Tent or find a hotel etc)

Anybody fancied trying the Scumball Rally? Seems like an awesome way to do a Euro road trip, especially for those who were inexplicably not invited to the Gumball Rally. :p

We're actually setting off on our Euro Road Trip in a months time, just finished speaking with the insurance company :)

Our route is;

France > Germany > Austria > Hungary > Romania > Hungary > Austria > Germany > France

It's mostly visiting a lot of places in Romania with a few stops on the way down.

We've booked hotels based on them having secured parking, staying one or two nights in locations.

Will be a lot of driving but isn't that what a road trip is about?

We're going down in the Range Rover Classic I restored 2 years ago.

This is our "rough" route for Romania, we have a Romanian friend meeting us in Miskolctapolcai for the whole of the Romanian leg;

I could start a thread on the trip if people are interested, will be taking a lot of photos and uploading them whilst away :)
