**** The Official Superman - Man Of Steel Discussion Thread ****

Simply stunning. Film of the year so far. Wow.

Edit: Now I'm home and having thought about it some more, its still a brilliant film and I'm trying to think of something negative, but I just can't.

Oh I could, there were plot holes a plenty. But I won't knock it because I simply loved it.

Anyone else see the LEXCORP fuel truck? Any other Easter Eggs you noticed?

Yep noticed that.

No film is free of plot holes, so for that reason alone I generally ignore them unless they are story breaking. Thus, I can't find any negatives in this film. Maybe the OTT action, but even that fits if you think about it :)

ops, sorry mods. Didn't see this thread

Well, I watched this earlier today

Not what I was expecting. To be honest, the first part was ok ish but the second was a total copy of the avengers. Pretty much the entire second half was just a complete brain dead, popcorn action, cgi fest.

I really enjoyed the opening scene in Krypton, but there was a few bits I personally thought were either silly, or just not required.

The Star Wars/Avatar flying dragons.....what on earth?

The fight scene between Zod and JorEl. This should not have happened. The Kyptonian army should have sent him straight to the Phanton Zone and ended the scene with both JorEl and LauraEl watching CalEls spaceship launch with the planet crumbling around them.

--------------

Next up, whilst I kinda like the flashbacks I think we needed more of a background story of Clark growing up in Smallville. Now you could say this would make the film much longer, but hold on till you read my final thoughts. There was some REALLY great moments early on in the film. For the die hard fan, some quite emotional parts. The baby calEl crying in the spaceship brings a lump to the throat (they always play the sad music to get the emotions going don't they).....and the Jonathan Kent death scene is VERY moving. I've always thought Kevin Costner was born to play this part. Shame he wasn't in it more (MORE BACK STORY!!!!!!)

The worst part of the film had to be the lack of the fortress of solitude. Not only that, but the entire spaceship / huge number of kryptonians who invaded earth. This stinked of a copy from avengers. I bet if you watch the last 40 minutes of both Man of Steel and Avengers you'd be hard pushed to tell them apart. We've seen alien spaceships destroying New York how many times now?

No hang on.....the WORST part of the film was how he even became superman. So he goes into the spaceship, JorEl opens a door revealing the costume????? and the next minute he's superman off saving the world.

Why did Zod want Superman and Lois to board his spaceship? Why not just go after superman and kill him? Did they want Lois for anything? so they locked her up in a cell.....right next to a control pod. She puts the S thingy in the slot and Computer JorEl basically instructs her to become some kinda marine alien killing super woman. again, why was she on the spaceship again?

Why did they take supermans blood BEFORE they knew JorEl had inserted the DNA of all kryptonians into his cells?

I'm struggling with the whole "did jorel want superman to use the DNA in his cells" to populate kryptonians on earth? Did he? Well he must have done else why put it in his body? Seems like JorEl has quite a lot in common with Zod. Yeah ok, so Zod went OTT on trying to exterminate and terraform the planet but it's kinda bad that JorEl would want to interfere with another planet. This goes against everything we have come to know about this character from the comics and previous films. I get that they were a race hell bent on expansion, but didn't they use deserted planets for that

Final thoughts......whilst my thread reads as thought I hated it....I did kinda enjoy it. I'm a big superman fan, but like the Star Trek reboots....this doesn't really have anything to do with Superman but more to pleased popcorn munching brain dead Americas who don't like well written storylines....they just want ACTION AND CGI!!!!!

I WISH, I WISH, I WISH, this could have stayed more like the original superman film. No, not the red pants and cheese....but more of a better background story and him becoming superman to save everyday people becoming the beacon of hope for all humanity. That aside, and going back to my first point, the editing of the film was all wrong. The last hour was too fast and packed in far too much action. This could have been trimmed down no end. To be honest, I think they tried to fit too much in for one film. I'm guessing that they didn't want to pitch this film to die hard comic book fans, and made it this way to pleased everyone (making more bucks $$$$$). What they should have done is trim out all the alien shooting, and just have the superman vs zod fight at the end. That fight was really great and was all the film needed.

: Keep your eagle eyes well open for the little bits of canon candy

Smallville sign, Lex Corp Lorry (blink and youll miss these)
Angry guy in the café (a nod there to Superman 2)

3/5

^^ as a final wrap up.....anyone who wants to see a great ACTION flick.....please go and see the 2D Version. Like the geek I am, I went to see the 3D Film. There is ZERO 3D, and due to the sheer pace of the action, the framerate and darkness from the glasses spoils it. SEE THE 2D Version!!!!

On a lesser film I do trip over them and they can spoil it for me, it's like 'hold on a minute if he'd just done this or that' then the whole thing just seems silly. But yeah overall it rocked, so I'm not going to pick it apart. It worked very well I thought.

My understanding was...

1) Not sure why the Fortress of Solitude is such a big thing. In the original films, it just seemed like an excuse to slow the pace of the films down to zero for a while. I know why you say it was a bit like Avengers, but would you expect anything else when it is Superman against Zod, a megamaniacal war machine?
2) The whole suit thing was because all the Kryptonians have a "suit", it just happens that Supes was the traditional red and blue, as opposed to the brown and grey of the others. Would it have been better if it was like the other versions where he got his sewing machine out
3) Zod wanted to find the codex. Superman knew where it was but would likely be unwilling to give it, so either Lois knows and would tell, or they would use Lois to force Supes to tell. They tried the first (off screen), and didn't get a chance to do the second.
4) I guess they took the blood to better understand the changes that had taken place for him to be powerful.
5) As for did JorEl want to populate Earth with the DNA, yes, but not to the same extent as Zod. I guess he wanted the race to live on, but didn't want to completely exterminate another race to do it.

I have seen people moaning about
how the laser eyes of Zod at the end would have easily killed the humans if he had looked right a bit. Surely they should be moaning about the laser eyes. All the other powers (jumping, running, punching etc) are due to the extra energy of the sun increasing muscle and stuff. How would the sun suddenly allow laser eyes?
This is comic book fiction, some things are meant to be accepted however absurd.

Your spoiler tag pretty much summed it up for me. Just got back and I am disappointed, just another blockbuster action/CGI fest. Why we have to have this relentless pace from one action scene to another I just don't know. Same with the Star Trek reboots.

I grew up with the originals so maybe I just can't let go of them!

Just got back;

Easily the best Superman film I've seen (though that's hardly much of a recommendation), lots of epic action scenes, some good story telling (mainly Kal-El's backstory) but I did find the 'main' story with Zod slightly thrown together without much thought

It's certainly better than average but at the same time by no means perfect (not after only 1 viewing anyway) 4/5

2 and a half hours flew by, held my attention 100% from the first second.

That alone I would give it 9/10.

However
However, looking deeper, I am not 100% satisfied....hard to put my finger on it, is it the lack of any humour? Or the 1 speed pacing of the movie, good as it is, like a song, a little change of pace in the middle helps to refresh things up a little. I am not saying I was bored, far from it, I enjoyed every second but I feel the movie is missing something. I can't say is missing heart, that it has plenty of, although the constant struggle in the movie I felt was a little too long and perhaps I would've liked to see him getting over that before the end.

My sister text me to ask how was the movie, my first thought was - it got straight to the point. It really did, he became superman almost immediately.

And that command key, is it me or it is just another form of USB stick? Lol

So, 7/10 from me. Enjoyable and it looks amazing.

Just back from watching with the misses. She loved it, mainly due to the lead actor I feel but she is a huge fan of the original films. I thought it was, well ok to pretty good. It wasn't bad, just a bit daft and OTT in place (yes I know it's about a flying man from another planet) I thought the cgi was just to intrusive. Soundtrack was awesome though with some truly epic base sweeps. Russell Crowe was also very good along with Michael Shannon.

7-10

I saw this last night. I have to say I loved the first half. It was absolutely excellent untill halfway through. At first i disliked the change in zods character and the way crypton was shown, and it continued to get worse after he found Clark. Everything in between about Clark growing up was great. Took a huge nose dive when the worlds engine was released.
Shame had the potential to be a classic.

saw it last night, cracking film and easily the best comic book/super hero movie since Dark Knight

No "Kneel before Zod!" made me a sad panda though :p

just so long as its better than superman returns then i will go and see it, never been so let down with a super hero than i was with returns ok daredevil springs to mind but you get the idea

I really, really, want to see it. I need to find the right time to though!

Really puzzled by the RT rating, especially when you consider that other films that are much worse are getting higher ratings on their system. Anyway, I will just judge it for myself as I have disagreed with critics before.

Well that was disappointing, basically an Avengers rip-off with none of the heart you really need to see within Superman to understand that him just being practically invincible isnt the whole of the story. Thats the bit you have to get right in Superman above all else otherwise you just cant connect with him...

Good action film I guess, poor script though and poor realisation of Krypton (Matrix much?), really wish they spent much more time pre-Superman while he was in Smallville and finding himself/his purpose...

Oh well least it was better than IM3

ps3ud0

It was ok. It lacked warmth and levity, was hugely cheesy in parts, and it occurred to me that there must be a long list of better ways to put Earth in danger from Zod than some terraforming device which caused weird logical inconsistency with the supposed powers that the other Kryptonians had on Earth when it took Clark 33 years to master and control them.

Also, the final fight was good, but not as good as the end of the Avengers. Complete disregard for the wanton destruction of Metropolis too, which was never fully explained nor mentioned.

Oh, and Amy Adams was terrible.

The editing was super dodgy, and the script was seriously weak in places (but Goyer's always been prone to having some utter clangers when it comes to dialogue so that's par for the course, really).
