Although I applaud Microsoft for listening to feedback I do think it has made the next-gen war more boring... If they had implemented something like the following I think they would have been on to a winner i.e 3 different versions of each game (1 physical, 2 digital):

'Disc based' edition - like the PS4 disc copies can be rented/sold/lent etc. (most expensive)

'Digital - Friends and family' edition - Can be lent to 1 friend and also shared between friends and family (slightly cheaper than disc based edition)

'Digital - One account version' - Can only be associated with 1 account and cannot be exchanged or traded i.e. like steam (slightly cheaper than friends and family edition)


Thoughts?

Well done Microsoft. Brave move, but welcome. Can't quite believe they didn't see it all coming though, did they think people wouldn't be fussed?

Play your entire Xbox One game library (inc DLC) on any xbox by logging in with your account, allow up to 10 friends and family to download an play any of your games and DLC for free, not have to put a disc in the drive to play a game etc...

That's it?

Putting a disc in is no trouble. I'll only ever have one xbox in the house = one account and wouldn't ever have the need to sign in to my account on another friend's xbox - never have in the past.

Sharing your library with up to 10 friends? I doubt that was ever going to be the case but now i can share my games with whoever I want anyway.

I wonder if they need to create additional protection in places where the online DRM would have meant a hack was pointless to make (i.e. hacking the BD drive mad no difference with the DRM in place)...

Probably the only real thing that will take effort to get right in light of the changes...

Way to confusing you mean, time again it's been shown consumers get confused where there'd different versions.
It's why there's no retail version of win8 and why there's essentially only premium and professional.


They could have done a digital vs physical thing, but the backlash was so strong, they've decided to remove the DRM even for digital, so these advantages can no longer be implemented.

It's documented as being the case, the advantage is (was?) you don't have to lend a friend the disc and then try to get it back again if you want to play. Keep in mind it would have let you play the entire game catalogue of 10 friends as well, i'd say that was a pretty good thing.

And you always can play your games and one of your friends could play at the same time, something you defiantly can't do with physical.

I thought the Xbox exclusive line up and game content at E3 (once you got away from the DRM stuff) was more impressive by quite some margin to be honest.

Sure Again though only while they need the core gamer and enthusiasts to help give it mainstream credibility. I'd be very surprised if in a few years time gaming was still their priority/ where they were putting their money.
