Annoying PPI calls / Harrassment

Well for what seems the billionth time but is close to around 100 I keep getting calls from 0845 2863338 regarding PPI. I have went down the usual avenues with ICO complaints but can't seem to stop them. It's getting to a point where it is becoming more than three times a day, I occasionally get through to an adviser who says they'll remove me but on the same day I get a few other calls from the same number (some silent).

After numerous occasions I eventually started asking WHICH apparent database they have my number on record they say they can't tell me because it's confidential - which I know to be wrong. ICO has suggested if it is harassment (the amount of calls has increased since querying which apparent database has my details on it) then the online form I filled out for the ICO says they can't do anything? To be honest what I got from ICO just really confused me.

I have been advised to write a letter to them with the times and dates of the calls which I have a log with recorded delivery but can't find the company's name or address. Can anyone on OCUK please help me out? Just after the name and address so I can send it to them.

Feel a bit silly of it going this far, been asking for removal for months now and don't seem to be getting anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Can you not get your phone provider to block the number?

Or if its to a mobile, block it on that with an app or built in jobby.

I was receiving ~3 calls/day from who I think was T-mobile. They were trying to sell me something I didn't need according to the Google hits on searching their number. I used to just leave the phone on silent and let it ring off. This went on for at least 2 months. Then, one day a couple of weeks back, I'd had enough. I simply answered the phone with 'PLEASE STOP CALLING ME', then hung up.

This thread reminded me - I haven't heard a peep since.

I had contacted my operator T-Mobile to block the number who said they did, however I still get calls. Tried a work around on my windows phone from a guide I found on a forum to block numbers, hope it works.

Tried what Danza suggested, sadly they don't seem to take notice thus far.

Is their a registry of 0845 numbers somewhere? I.e. name and address of a premium number if all else fails?

Hopefully my phone can block it and this will be the end of it. It gets really annoying after a time.

I agree they are bothersome, my Virgin land-line is registered with TPS plus was ex-directory, yet they still persisted and called, never found out how they got my number, as it seems once someone gets hold of it, they sell it and re-sell it onto many different databases.

The only thing i did to get rid of them, is to switch to VOIP, some reasons even though i have a local number as my VOIP number, they don't seem to call VOIP numbers, maybe they are registered differently, so been cold-call free since making the switch.

Maybe something to consider, if you don't find any other way.

British Gas did this to me (0800 9806929) on a daily basis for a year from 2010 to 2011. I sent them a note via complaints form off their web site asking them to remove my details. They responded 2 days later and all was fine. Up until then, I saved the number as 'telepest' and just didn't answer their calls.

I registered with TPS back in 2007 but it doesn't stop PPI text messages coming through. I did try to re-register with TPS just in case my number expired although it still knew my number. Does TPS only block cold calls and not texts?

Can Android phone anti-virus programs extend to cold call/text detection via a definition file or is it still virus-related only?

TPS only works for UK based companies. A lot of them have a Uk number but it is just a redirect to India or Kenya or whatever.
Trouble is, once you have answered them, your number will be flagged as a live one and they will probably sell it in a big block of others to anyone that wants it.

i may be wrong but you may also find that TPS only covers cold calling random numbers and yours being one. if for instance you go sign up at your local gym and don't tick the box saying it's ok that they pass your details onto xxx companies then this may be the source. seems to appear often.

on android, go sms will filter texts based on whatever you want. i have it to delete messages with the word ppi, STOP, from non-contact numbers.

Well I registered on the TPS and within 3 weeks it went for 3/4 calls a week to 1/0 now. If I do get a call and it's a live person then you can ask where they got your details from and inform them that it's illegal to be calling you. Most of the time they just hang up then.

ICO has grown some teeth recently - a company has been fined for particularly systematic harassment and ignoring the TPS completely.

I've fixed the problem on a landline - BT6500 phone permanently set to do not disturb mode. I still get nuisance calls (despite being registered with the TPS), but the phone never rings for them so I don't care. £30 plus whatever you have to pay your phone company for caller id.

TPS is a partial solution, but it only works for UK companies doing live person to person sales calls.

From the TPS FAQ:

Telephone Preference Service (TPS) are unable to investigate complaints relating to text messages. Text messages are defined as "electronic mail" under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 and as such, they should not be sent without the prior consent of the individual subscribers. If you are receiving SMS marketing and have not given prior permission, Please contact the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) who are the body responsible for enforcing the above regulation.
The information provided in your complaint may enable identification of persistent transgressors and help the ICO take action where appropriate. Their contact details are:

Sadly this, even pressing the button "to take you off our phoning list" (or whatever) highlights one as somehow compliant and one just gets more phonecalls.

You can try to mess them around on the phone, and sometimes your marked as a nuisance. I did this to an Indian call centre, and the calls stopped!
