Hi there,

I'm looking at buying a BR player as a present (on a budget). I'm tempted by the cheapest offerings from the usual suspects but I want to make sure that they aren't total arse.

Thanks :)

How on earth did you come up with that as a suggestion? :D

Let's just review, shall we...

1) it's a gift - so given that the PS3 controller is an arse to use for DVD/BD playback for anyone who isn't a gamer, then making it usable means buying a PS3 DVD remote. That's hardly a great gift, is it. "Here's a BD player for you. Oh, by the way, you need to go spend £X before you can use it properly"

2) The OP includes the line "(on a budget)" - Bear in mind that branded budget BD players are available from under £50, what shop do you know of that sells PS3s for less? If you're going to suggest second-hand then I wouldn't like to be on your Christmas list.

Nitefly,
Have a look at the Toshiba BDX4350. Despite the low price (discounted to £49.95) it's 3D and has some smart features including BBC iPlayer. The rear panel has an Ethernet port. There's an optional wireless dongle (£10) if iPlayer seems like a useful addition. Budget for a cheap HDMI cable as one may not be included included in the box with price-fighter models.

Out of interest, anyone own these cheap Samsung or Toshiba Blu-Ray players? How loud are they in use during the silent sections of movies etc?

Thanks guys, I appreciate your kind responses.

Will probably plump for that £50 toshiba lucid suggested as I can pick it up close to me :)

it is the best cheap blu ray player though is it not?

firmware updates to the ps3 ensure it is always compatible with newer standards, etc.

tbh though i havent looked into blu ray players much, but it also has wi-fi built in, a gaming console built in, can be used to stream media as well as store photos (turn them into slideshows too) and home videos, etc.

the ps3 basically does a hell of a lot and with the ps4 coming out in a few months, the second hand market will be flooded with them making them extremely cheap to buy.

if your really worried about them dying, sony's product quality is second to none in the console market, they can also be repaired at home for cheap by people with no knowledge due to the countless youtube videos of people repairing them.

my mate who couldnt even tell you what a ram module looks like managed to change the laser on his ps3 because of a youtube video i told him to watch.
