Windows 8 breakthrough !

i liked vista when it came out, i ran it on an (at the time) slowish laptop with no problems. windows 7 was better of course, but i did like vista

That's the problem average user wants to be spoon fed,old days on DOS you had no choice but to get stuck in and learn commands and how to do things, nowadays it's so damn easy but they still complain or find it hard, sad times indeed  .

I agree with you on that. I know a lot of people who got computers and they all say that they are good on the computer when in reality just cause they can use Facebook, on-line shopping and Google earth they know everything and say that anything that is different to what they are using is rubbish as they don't want to spend a bit of time learning new stuff, everything today is convenience be it driving or owning a PC.

In the old days of DOS everything had to be worked out and it encouraged learning how a PC actually work so knowledge was needed through trial and error and the PC's Netscape and the primary means of chatting was Newsgroups, IRC and then ICQ. Or before that Bulletin boards then people would call the net rubbish.

I like windows 8 and don't find much difference between that and win 7, especially using start8 and bypassing the metro interface then Win 8 is great and manageable.

To be fair the metro search capabilities are excellent, these days I find myself mashing the windows key and typing, then hitting return to launch an icon. I'm faster at typing than I would be using a start menu, unless the icon was frequently used and I knew exactly where it was.

Unfortunately to me metro is just a bit "run" command basically.

Windows 8 is great though, but so was Windows 7. I really can't put much between them but I do know that these day if I went back to Windows 7 I'd miss the metro search speed and accuracy.

Oddly enough I still use windows XP at work along with server 2003/2008 etc :)

I never use the start menu in 7 for anything other than hitting the windows key and typing the application I wish to load if it's something not already pinned to my task bar.

I held off with 8 after jarring and bad experience after setting up a new colleages PC and we ran out of Win 7 licenses. When I got an SSD for home I stuck 8 on to give it a go and I dunno what the fuss was, it works perfectly for me. Win 8 with an SSD has given my 5 year old CPU and RAM a second chance it's like a new machine and I love it.

I don't use the Metro apps, but they're not for me. But I just have all my usual suspect apps like the Adobe suite all sat on the metro screen waiting after a boot and that's me sorted. Quick and simple which was the idea in the first place.

Maybe everyone has stopped throwing their toys out of the pram, sat down and actually started learning their way round it and have realised it is actually bloody good.

I got my first PC just after Windows 95 came out. I learnt how to navigate it and use it. I continued using that knowledge with win 98, ME, XP, Vista and 7. Then microsft decided it wants everyone to start learning how to navigate and use Windows 8. Why? Just keep things the way they are instead of forcing people to feel like they have never used a PC before like I felt with Windows 8.

Did you watch the recent Microsoft Build developer keynote given by Steve Ballmer? It was all fairly quiet but he got loud cheers when he stated users would be able to boot straight to the desktop, and more cheers when he announced there would be a Start button. Developers are relatively sophisticated users compared to the average person and clearly didn't find Windows 8 bloody good as far as the UI goes.

Who is forcing you? Microsoft? Your computer?

Have the previous versions of Windows become obsolete because of Windows 8?

Windows 8 is a product. Nobody is forcing you to buy it. If you are happy to stay on Windows 7, feel free :)

Personally I like that Microsoft has tried to revolutionise the way we use computers. If I had tried it and I didnt like it, I would have gone back to Windows 7. :)

Developers at Build were almost certainly not cheering literally for themselves regarding the Start button and booting to desktop, rather that Microsoft removed two pieces of friction certain people are getting hung up on for whatever reason.

7 is just Vista in a nice party dress, you know? I have no problems with either. CBA with 8 at the moment and no sign we will roll it out at work for the foreseeable future. The only thing that might prompt me to move to 8 will be HSA features, if it's a requirement and if any HSA stuff ends up being worthwhile

Vista is heavier on resources and doesn't have the awesome snap features that you get in 7. It's a pain to use Vista after having 7

I actually prefered Vista over XP and Linux over XP :),Vista was a solid OS for me.

My rules are simple , never listen to FUD and try the OS in question myself for a good period of time.

I used Vista from the outset, and jumped to 7 as soon as I could. So much more polished than Vista

edit +1 to what Link said

I bought Win8 a while back thinking the complaints were likely unjustified from a vocal minority.

Uninstalled it within 48hours.

Other than the initial issues with some drivers I never had any real bother with Vista.

Windows XP still heavily used/Preferred.

In fact in the UK, there was a slight increase in last month :D

XP is also probably the most pirated OS as well,a lot of home users and even colleges are slow to upgrade,I went to my local college recently and they were still using XP,it was like me going back to 2001 lol scary.

Also Win8 is hardest OS to hack key wise ,older versions ie XP,Vista,Win7 is easy and I do wonder how many illegal copies are out there,(yes all my Windows are legit before you ask).

Probably overwhelmed at the inclusion of two major features that should have been there in the first place. :p

Don't forget the MoD are still, by and large, using XP still. I also still use XP ... but only in a VM when I need to use my scanner :)

Hmm that is struggling to and finally past Vista is a pretty big condemnation for an OS not a reason to celebrate.

I think the reason most people don't need Windows 8 (apart from all the previous problems with it) is simply that it doesn't represent a value for money upgrade over Windows 7, for many people.
