Hi all I have just got a new HD as me old one died I got this one

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-025-TS&groupid=1657&catid=1660&subcat=2271

I have an

Asus striker extreme MB using the 680i SLI chipset

If I run HD tune and do a read speed test it starts at like 150mb then drops with in like 0.1 second to 60 and stays like that for about 3 seconds then drops to 2.5mb and then some times goes back up a little.

Does any one have any ideas?

I did install the latest Nforce drivers from nvidia I am wondering if its installed a nforce sata controller driver that just dont play well?

If so how would I reinstall the default window one I am sure I read its possible and some times better to use it.

Thanks

ummm the new drive is a 6gb/s model i know me mb dont support that but do i need to use a cable that supports it still could this be the issue?

do i need to use a cable that supports it still could this be the issue?

No, all SATA cables are the same.

Maybe try rolling back your SATA driver - open device manager, it'll be there under IDE controllers, RAID controllers or storage controllers, and right click - properties. Go to the driver tab and you'll be able to roll it back, see if it helps.

If the speeds are very erratic and constantly drop way down, it could be a bad cable or drive, too, so if the above doesn't work try a different SATA cable.

im going tocheck for bad sectors soon.

then try cable if there is no bad sectors then i will roll back drivers

i read it makes no diff my mother board does not support 6gb/s it will just default it to what it can handle?

What else is accessing the drive while you're running the benchmark?

sorry thought i had replyed to your question

nothing its a fresh install of win 7 i have another drive i will double check to see what thats doing.

i really hope its just then force driver

If it's a fresh install then the search indexer will probably still be running.

If you run resource monitor from Task Manager it'll tell you what's going on. Don't try running a benchmark if something else is accessing the disk.

i disabled the indexer thingy on the new drive first thing i do when i install win7.

it really does drop low to like 2mb/s some thing is killing it unless the drive is all ready dieing?

any way will check asap i cant play at moment :(

Ok

Just turned me PC back on and thought I would do one more test and got

Min 80.87 MB/s
max 121.9 MB/s

Ave 115.9 MB/s

Access time 15.5ms (does this seem high to you?)
Burst 117 MB/s
CPU usage 2.0% (does this all so seem high to you?)

Please look at the results some of them seem a bit high to me

And at least there better than me last scores.
Maybe win update was running and I did not know?

Ok further testing I have removed the nforce drivers and got these results

Seems to drop a lot during test though burst speed is amazing compared to me other drive

Ok thanks well I did a quick scan using HD tune for bad sectors none showed up.

Should I do a windows disk check and restart the pc?

Looks fine and normal.
Those drops in performance on your pic are down to either something else accessing the drive as rpstewart says or the caching algorithm on the disks controller isn't very good!
You could look to see if there is updated firmware for the drive but be careful applying it.

Also I would leave your machine on doing nothing over night since you have a fresh install so windows can finish any background optimisation work then re run the tests once it's settled down. Also disable things like system restore during testing to make sure it isn't taking a checkpoint or something.

Post back your findings.

Ok it may just be me but transferring one file say 6gb from one hd to another it transfers at about 60mb/s starts at like 140mb/s then goes down to 60 in about 4 seconds.

I am just worried the HD is faulty.

I did a check disk and every thing looked good no bad sectors etc etc.

I looked at the SMART details and tested that using HD tune and every thing was perfect.

Is it just me or expecting to much or what?

Thanks

EDIT

Some times me PC seems and feels unresponsive as if the HD is spinning up I have it on performance plan and spin down for HD`s OFF
