How is your case fans setup? Do you have a side fan? My case comes with a side intake and after switching it around to outtake I tuck of about 5-8C from both cards under load.
With one having two fans and the other one fan, the card with two might be taking most of the air and starving the other?

Try taking out the cards thats fine and run the single card and see if temps cool down. Before that you could also try and just remove the side panel and watch temps see if they drop "This would indicate poor case airflow"

i have the CM Storm Trooper Case, i've got two 120 fans at the side. even at that the inside of the case is rather cool, which is very strange.

if you can, swap the bottom to the top. And if you are really worried look into an after-market cooler.

Can you clarify what card is overheating please? Is it the top card with the monitors plugged into it?

Try both cards separately to see what temperatures they get.

the second card is XFX 7870 2GB single fan ghz edition. first card is SAPPHIRE 7870 with two fans. my first card is the master with the HDMI cable in it.

Its all about case air flow which helps with cooling your components.

Try putting a fan right behind the GPU's, blowing air between them into the gap see if this helps.

Is the second card hitting 99 just during gaming?

Either way, it sounds like a problem. The card shouldn't be getting that hot, even with bad airflow.

I always put my hottest card last.

Guess it depends what the fans are like. My Gigabyte 7950s pull air into the case from the back and then downwards. So it's best to have the hotter card on top otherwise it would just get even hotter with air from the top card being blasted onto it.
