They're still both one season wonders. Benteke's last season in Belgium wasn't bad and Lukaku had a couple of ok seasons in Belgium, but considering the strength of the league neither were exactly special.

Going off wiki, Benteke managed 44 goals in 117 in Belgium. Lukaku did 41 in 98.

There's no way we'll go for him, but I'd like him. It's all very well playing small, nippy players, but if we come up against a team who set out to negate that then a Benteke would have been an incredibly useful option.

We're going to fall into the Barcelona trap otherwise (although we're obviously not quite as good!). Playing beautiful football with absolutely no plan B.

Looks like Wiki says Lukaku scored 33 in 73 games in Belgium.

It's a pretty difficult (and pointless) argument to have seeing as they're both have similar backgrounds and statistics, so it probably comes down to personal opinion. On that note I'd take Lukaku - he's three years younger than Benteke, a bigger club have signed him and he was chased throughout Europe as a youngster at Anderlecht.

Nii Lamptey was chased throughout Europe as a youngster whilst at Anderlecht

Ended up following Ron Atkinson to Highfield Road, and being, well, pretty dire

few tweets/rumours saying benteke would choose spurs over chelsea.

i can't see levy stumping up £20m for him but remember, villa paid £7m for him. not a massive amount but not throwaway money for villa. i think them wanting to double their money is not unreasonable. imo levy will offer £15m + a squad player or maybe even defoe!

For the record, I don't think £18-20million is that bad a fee.

It's when you get up into the £25million talk of Higuain, Rooney, Van Persie etc money. that comparatively it's a bit silly.

Scouting has come on leaps and bounds since Nii Lamptey's days. Plus Lukaku managed 17 league goals last season, compared to Lamptey's 0 for Villa, Coventry and Venezia.

Not much of a comparison... but good try

He is if Benteke is worth £25m!

Whilst on the subject I'd take Lukaku over Benteke every day. Never mind the stats he just has more to his game IMO.

Not sure what point you're making:

- Chamakh was a free transfer
- Marin was only £6.5m and had made over 15 appearances for Germany
- Sahin was a loan
- Borini had just scored 9 in 24 games in Italy and had been capped in the national teams. By all accounts he could still be a success at Liverpool, he was injured for a large part of last season
- Bebe transfer was as a result of scaremongering

None of these are anything like the £17m Chelseas paid for a 19 year old.

That's because Smalling is poor, not because Benteke is great. Calamitous defender.

Benteke took penalties too, which pushed his goals up. He's a decent striker who did do well. One good season means nothing though. I think the £20m plus estimations are a joke (not that a club won't pay it.) But good luck to Villa, I'm sure they'll get excellent money for him, everyone is after a striker and a lot of bigger teams in the league looking for one.
