So I manage to sell my keyboard on ebay and post it off using Collectplus couriers and after a few days the parcel reaches it's destination and the buyer signs for it all ok.

On the same day he raises a dispute straight to Paypal claiming the item he received is totally different from the item on ebay.

I've replied to the case on Paypal and i'm waiting for him to send this item back to me. He basically says he received a 'microsoft keyboard and mouse' in the box and not the Alienware keyboard as expected.

I tried looking up his phone numbers on ebay and the person on the other end of the phone does not recognise him. The mobile number he gave out on one of his auctions also just rings out.

My question is, should he be telling the truth, how likely is it that someone from Yodel has swapped out my keyboard for an old Microsoft keyboard and mouse? I did call Yodel and they claim it is highly unlikely as the driver would have to pick out my box from all the hundreds for delivery and then get another keyboard from somewhere?

I don't know who to believe?

I have been told by Paypal to call them back once the parcel comes back to me and if the item is not the one I sent then they will action this.

I'll upload some pics of the item I sent and the item I receive back once it arrives.

First time i've had an issue like this in over 1500+ transactions on ebay.

Very unlikely, how would they know what was in the box? It seems like a lot of hassle for a keyboard.
If you were doing things like this you'd go for the high value easy to sell down the local pub kit like laptops.

surely the guy is just going to post back his old microsoft keyboard and mouse?

B@

What's to stop people doing this? When I spoke to a guy at Paypal (UK based I think) he said they are well wise to this and to call them when I get the parcel back.

I know Paypal offer seller protection so I am going to use this experiance as a 'test case' to see what exactly Paypal's response is.

If they refund the buyer and I am left with an old **** keyboard and no money then I won't be selling on ebay again that's for sure.

This is almost certainly the expected outcome though. Ebay & PayPal side with the buyer, not the seller. This is likely to turn out as his word against yours, unless he has been reported for doing something similar before.

If the buyer sends back a different item and you are left out of pocket surely it is worth reporting to the police, as you would have been the victim of fraud/deception (whichever is the applicable offence)?

Whether the police do anything about it is a different kettle of fish.

Even in the police case it's one persons word against another with no real way of proving who's telling the truth.

Again this is where the MM is vastly better than Ebay. You may occassionally get less for an item on the MM but I've been using it for years and never had a single issue with anyone.

The MM is definitely the way forward for the no fees alone, never mind the fact it's very rare to get scammed.

I have a feeling that Paypal will side with the buyer and tell me to make a claim against the courier, Yodel.

It's a very good scam to be honest because no one can prove anything, in the end you'll probably just have to write it off and mark it down to experience.

One of the simplest tricks in the book buyers are using on eBay, unless you took a hell of a lot of evidence, your going to end up with a returned Microsoft keyboard & mouse. eBay, will side with the buyer as you both cannot prove anything, and it always looks bad on the seller.

Always and ever, video everything you send through eBay, as extreme as it sounds and I've mentioned a few times, record the boxing of the product, any serial numbers both on the box and on the keyboard/mouse. Record and picture you packing the item and if you must take another picture in the post office itself.

Or... just avoid the eBay at all costs, as it's very very simple to scam people. MM make's a nice ground for trades without fee's.

Simple for the police, Say he stole it, They check his home, see he is useing it, check S/N and Boom!

But the police wont help you so your stuffed

Not exactly the point is it.

If your Range Rover Evoque got stolen and replaced with a Ford Mondeo would you be ok that they're pretty much the same car because they share the same platform?

I'm prepared to write off the £40 costs but it's the principle. I'm going all the way with this one, police and all.
