I had a nasty creaking issue at pace the other week, thought there were problems with my bottom bracket. Had the guy at the bike shop take a look, and when i got it back he said he couldn't hear anything and thought he had fixed it.

Took the bike home and out for a spin, and as soon as i was at pace the creaking started up again. I was pretty gutted to say the least, until i figured out the noise had been the side of my trainer rubbing against the crank while the pedal rotated :)

Think my bottom bracket is in need of a service so I'll be doing that tonight. Getting a click when pedalling now, hopefully its not a bearing..

There isnt really much else to a bottom bracket, it's pretty much just a couple of bearings.

What type of BB is it? You wont be able to do much to service one with sealed bearings, which most of them are now.

Hmm don't think I'd be happy cycling anywhere without padding.

You don padding to cycle to the shops?

Point I was making was that his bum just isn't used to sitting on a saddle period. Regardless of wearing padding. Something one gets used to in a short period of time after a few rides.

Had similar recently - annoying creaking when pushing hard, particularly noticeable when cycling into a headwind. Had been annoying me for weeks and no amount of fettling seemed to get to the bottom of it.

Finally worked it out at the w/end there - one of the bolts holding the bottlecage in place on the downtube had worked slightly loose meaning it could wobble ever so slightly. Headwind or any extra air rushing past when i was going faster was catching my waterbottle and making the whole assembly vibrate. Tightened bolt - bike is now silent again.

Idiot much? :o :o :o

Well ok yes its sealed. I meant more along the lines of just regrease what I can and see if it is that which is clicking, and if so I guess I'll have to buy a new one >.<.

Will all Shimano BBs bee interchangeable (eg 105/Ultegra/DA bb will work with 105/Ultegra/DA chainrings/crankset)?

I would put money on the clicking not coming from the BB :)

The trouble I was sure the noise was coming from that area, but it was the front hub! Almost couldn't be further away from it lol!
Sounds travel in weird ways in bikes, particularly carbon fibre ones.

But I couldn't see why it would be the BB, the SRAM red crank just has an axle with two bearings, not much to move about really.

I'm hoping all your BB naysayers are wrong in my case. My bike started to sound like the BB was full of gravel in the last 40km on Saturday so I ordered an ultegra one for £13 so hopefully that'll sort it.

I keep seeing loads of adults on paths near me some of them obvious commuters?
Do most police just ignore you?
I live right near a large police station so there's nearly always cop cars around the area I live in.

I saw like 6 cop cars in 30mins yesterday one of them just approaching the traffic lights I was walking across with my bike.

I guess I could have potentially received a £30 fine for riding on the pavement if I had decided to risk it?

I can't imagine many people ever get done for it. You'd probably have to cause some genuine bother for them to do anything about it, like banging along at 20mph on the high street or something.

I think so. Much better at keeping the worst of the British winter out.

Also, replacement bearings are chap as chips, even ceramic ones.

Mmmm ok, but given the length of service of my 105 bracket (at least 3 years, possibly more if cleaning it tonight proves it isn't the BB), options being £20-44 for a Shimano (ranging from 105 to top end DA), why pay double for the Hope?

For a moving part that is, relatively speaking, cheap as chips I think 3 years is a pretty damned good term.

The nuts on my mudguards are forever working their way loose and rattling. It drives me nuts.
