I'm off to San Francisco on Saturday. Hotel is booked for the first few days, and we have a vague plan of stuff to do, places to see, restaurants to eat, etc. However I've only been once before and didn't get the chance to do too much exploring.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice or recommendations for the city?

Also, we're spending a few days later in the week north of the city in the Sonoma region, so if anyone knows of any decent vineyards, restaurants or hotels, I'd be grateful to hear! :)

Got to go down Lombard Street. Visit Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown. San Francisco is arguably THE best city in the world. I'm dying to go back.

If you like fish eat here in San Fran:-

book up the night time Alcatraz tour.

Tonga Room is an experience (I was smashed on cocktails)

Lefty O'Doul's off of Union Square is a cheesy piano bar but good fun, don't eat their food it's rank!!

Drive down Route 1 to Half Moon Bay and watch the surfers!

Check out the Ghirardelli chocolate factory tour. Quite interesting, and lots of Choc available for the Mrs!

Yes! This is great, and Pier 39. The clam chowder in a sourdough bowel. Mmmmm :D

Get up to Golden Gate first thing in the morning, watch the sunrise and the fog roll in. It's magical.

Alcatraz is worth it if you haven't been and can get a trip. I think the history of it is sweet.

I do like san fran. Great place.

Go to Alcatraz - do the night visit, it's more fun.
Hire a car and go down lombard street, and replicate the scenes from Bullit (without writing off your car).
Go to China town.
Go to Pier 39 / Fisherman's wharf
Have a dough bread pizza
Have clam chowder servced in a sour dough bread bowl
Visit the golden gate bridge
Take the cable car
Go to the cheesecake factory on top floor of Macy's
Union Square
North beach quarter (italian quarter)
Visit the gay quarter - seriously it's a good laugh
Go and listen to some jazz in mission and market district
Walk or cycle or hire one of those scooter bubble cars along the sea front and the main promenade.

Thanks for all the tips. We've both visited Alcatraz before so I think we might skip it this time - I'd like to go back at night, but the War Department is adamant not to go again. Will look into some of the restaurants mentioned (chocolate factory sounds amazing) and also the cable car.

Flowers have been packed, moustache has been grown! :)

I know the place will be teeming with tourists, but I'd like to try to stay in the quieter areas if possible. Unlikely an option though!
