Food supply for a month £30?

Yeh well as I said, right place-right time. The good things don't stay there long ;)

If you're subtle you can follow the staff member around with the pricing gun :D

(Done this before..)

I feel sorry for the people working there having to reduce stuff. In the local Tesco they get surrounded by old Indian women ready to grab the item as soon as it gets reduced to peanuts. A sign got put up saying that staff members can't reduce stuff on demand.

But yeah, occasionally you'll find some decent stuff reduced if you happen to be there at the right time and at a shop that doesn't get as many customers late in the evening.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! :D hopefully it wont be as tight come September as I'm due to go back to study and I'd get a little more than I do on ESA plus I can apply for a hardship fund.

Thanks for the tips :)

If your that hard up & missing meals pop a message in trust (with your address) & I'll get you a hamper delivered to you with a few things.

Blimey ive just spent £100 on a few bits, although there is some drink in that:eek:
Tell me about it, £30 wouldn't last me a week for coffee :(, I waste too much cash.

There you go. I was bored and needed something to work my brain.

Don't eat bread, you will end up fat and feeling like me now (after eating a baguette of garlic bread)

Looks to be about 2 - 2 and a half weeks worth to me? And it's just a lot of chille and spag bol.

£30 - not impossible but not healthy, really. I did £10/week for a while in first year of uni but that was 8 years ago now and I'd estimate the price of most things to have doubled since then.

Edit: you mentioned you had an injury. You need a decent diet to overcome that. It's time to put efforts into getting more money instead of efforts into spending £30/month.

the good things probably never even go there..

in my local medium sized asda I have never once seen any of the cookies, pizzas , cakes or freshly baked bread on offer..

yet I see loads of them on the shelves with 1-2 days away from the best before date, the staff must raid all the good stuff before it's even got a reduced sticker on it

Why are people suggesting things like chicken and mince? Even the cheapest cuts of chicken, e.g. wings, drumsticks or even whole chickens etc, are still ~£1 for a meal's worth. A can of beans will cost you 20-30p for a meal's worth.

basics/smartprice/everyday rice: ~40p for ~6 meals
tin chopped tomatoes: ~30p each
Tin kidney beans: 20p
Chilli powder: £1 for ~5-6 meals (if you like it hot, you can get bags of the "proper" indian hot stuff even cheaper)
Salt: 30p for ~500 meals worth
Tomato puree: ~40p for 5-6 meals

So thats about 80p for a basic chilli, half of which you could freeze for another day, or stick in the fridge for lunch the next day.

I've found that the cheapest veg tends to be carrots and onions.

Make yourself a huge pot of carrot soup, and again, freeze portion sized bags/containers to defrost as needed.

Don't buy bread as a) it's expensive and not particularly nutritious. b) if you really <need>/want bread, make your own. Bag of flour, some yeast, salt and sugar will make you at least 2-3 weeks worth.

It also might be worth seeing if you can get a cash & carry card.

It is doable, but it wont be pleasant, it'll be repetitive, and you will have to make a lot of sacrifices :(

Heres an interesting (but unlikely option)

If you have a back garden you could get some quail.
I only have 4 at the momentand their food doesnt cost much

I have them because i love birds but also i get breakfast that cost pence per meal

financial
20kg of quail food 10-15£
food per day per quail = 0.02kg
20kg of quail food will last 1000 days for one quail
for my 4 quail this will last 250 days or at worst 200 days

each quail can lay 250 ish eggs per year

so about 1000 eggs for 10-15kg food

id say it takes 4 eggs to make a small sandwich

quail don really brood their own eggs in uk. Besides much better than shop bought eggs. Eggs are also obviously a brilliant source of nutrients etc

I already have 2 eggs today to collect

Looking at this thread has really made me feel guilty about how much money I waste on food. I picked up a £3.50 bottle of fresh juice at lunch and though this would feed Wepohn for three and a half days. I put it back :o

Contact your local foodbank and see if you can get a few bits to help you through the month. Other option is to start making hard cuts and getting rid of little luxuries (Graphics card ect). You can always buy this stuff back when you get a job.

Most important thing is for you to keep healthy, so you can continue to look for employment.
