A45 AMG Test Drive - First Impressions

Took one out this morning, I can only echo what J1nxy has said to be honest. I really enjoyed driving it and its the car my heart wants me to buy but with up to 15% contribution available on the M135i the difference in price is significant.

I think discounts will come on the A45 at which point it could be viable for me but not at this point.

Which dealer did you drive at? I drove the one from MK. I'm nice that somebody else had the same thoughts I did as well on it.

Drove it at Hughes in Aylesbury, they only got it yesterday. Didn't have that long in it but did about 12 miles on a variety of roads including the odd poke of the loud pedal and it was driven from cold, 26 mpg.

Some of the stand out things for me was how good the damping is, some of the roads on the drive were pretty bad but the A45 seemed to take them in its stride which my SLK wouldn't. The steering is well weighted (seems to have a strong desire to centre though) and the sport mode is very well balanced without a hyperactive throttle response or continuously hunting through the gears.

Feels like the sort of car you can make progress in on any sort of road, would be epic for overtaking.

Exactly what I was pointing out. The Mercedes has a outstanding gearbox which a manual is no match for in a sprint. but in driving it remains to be seen whether the Mercedes can match the Evo's and Impreza's with their cornering ability.

I hope someone does do a comparison just to see if the Germans can better the Japanese in the 4wd stakes (apart from the GTR ;)).

I think the Merc is already the better choice for a bumpy b-road, yes the GTR will be vastly quicker on a circuit but on a narrow uk bumpy b-road I feel the Merc would be easier to pedal along compared to the GTR and possibly quicker.

Whilst not a GTR most of the reviewers think the A45 would eat the likes of the M3 and C63 cross country on a B road. In some of the videos you can see just how much speed it can carry through corners. This video also shows how nuts this little thing is...

Couple more videos as well

That German YouTube clip (The New A45 with... etc), at about 41 seconds - the change of gears sounds like a load of fake sneezes.

Thats a quote from Merc's press release about the engine. The FQ cars were only released in the UK as they were breathed on post import so were not type approved for Europe.
