I was excited about signing Higuain, but I agree with Trusty. The price hike is just too much . Suarez may be more expensive and have baggage, but at least you know he's top class in the Premier League.

When push comes to shove though. RM will give Liverpool the 50m, partly from the Higuain deal, and we'll be left with bugger all again.

I am so at the end of my tether it's untrue.

How good is Suarez really? last season was considerably better than the previous, but does that make him worth £30M+? I'm not convinced, he is certainly good, but has only been at that level for one season. The history of biting, the racism and the other poor behaviour devalues him a lot, there is enough about his bad attitude that makes one wonder if he will be consistent this season and the season after.

Only if you ignore his scoring rate at Ajax and ignore the dutch league. Even in his first full season he still almost got a goal every other game and one less assist than this year.

I suggest you look at his goals per game here in the last 5 or 6 years.

Injury problems aplenty for Arsenal pre season...

I would rather Arsenal over pay for Higuain than buy Suarez. £40 mill for a player with his baggage, and if he doesnt have a good season or has another episode like last season with Liverpool he could be agitating from a move next summer and we will make a loss on the £40 mill we paid.

We have gone from complaining about the lack of spending to complaining about spending too much.

Even if we got a few decent players on cheap we are still going to end up paying £15-20m on wages on each of them for a possibility of them being good.

I think Higuain is worth the punt at £28m.

If he goes to napoli and apparently he has asked for 48hrs to think about it, then RM will then have the money for Suarez. We won't even get the chance of getting him.

We will lose both targets in a couple of days.

The wenger will be back to buying his special players that most people complain about.

He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Wenger should just meet Higuain's valuation as clearly he wants to go to Arsenal rather than Napoli. As you said above, by letting Higuain go to Napoli, we will lose Suarez to Madrid, leaving us empty handed.

One in the hand is worth two in the bush as they say.

Arsenal are a bigger club than Napoli, but they have to be willing to put their money where their mouth is.

30mill on Higuain is a 10mill saving on Suarez.

I wouldn't want us to spend £30,000,000+ on a player to be honest, we have a financial structure in place and the club shouldn't go around jizzing money about like City and Chelsea. I'm almost certain that there are players equal to or better than Suarez who would command a far lower transfer fee and probably lower wages too. Plus as DM already touched upon there is Suarez' utterly woeful disciplinary record and his constant "antics". The guy is an arch-villain, just the sight of his face is enough to put me off football for a weekend. :p

Something does need to be done at Arsenal, we do need to start spending a little bit but in my opinion you don't have to go around spending upwards of £30,000,000 to guarantee they are the needed quality for the aspirations and aims of the club, which, whether we like it or not seem to be to qualify for the Champions League and anything extra is a bonus.

Yeah i just don't think he's worth that extra 7/8 mil, factor in wages over 4 years and its starts being an expensive deal, far more than you 12mil slapped on Gervinho plus i dunno 80g per week (remember he was at quite a high club before), and then the difference starts to become quite large. Giroud was bought for 12mil and he looks like he's going to be solid player. Me if i was Wenger/ the negotiators would have similar views in, that he's not worth that.

Napoli have just got a huge amount of money from the Cavani deal, presumable they will invest a good 20 mil of their own money, they then have a lot more financial mite to throw at players.

See, all of this just confirms the fact that Arsenal fans are starting to become penny pinchers now as well. Let Arsenal worry about the finances, they aren't a badly run club, they don't fluff huge fees on players all the time, the odd one won't hurt. They charge their fans the most to attend games and then you all say things like this?!

Higuain is a proven striker. No two ways about it. It's not as if he's costing a totally ridiculous sum of money. You don't ideally want Suarez either, the guy is a mental case.

Spurs are gearing up (assuming they keep Bale) to steal your 4th place spot, do you think you'll be able to attract players from the likes of Real Madrid without CL football? Not bloody likely.

Maybe the funds just aren't there, but you've been led to believe otherwise for a long time. If you come out of this transfer window without any proper signings, you're in trouble unless somehow your current squad is magnificent and injury free all next season.

I've never wanted nor demanded big name signings, I'm not against them either though. The right player can be worth spending big on, Higuain at 35mil would be significantly better spent money than 14mil +12-15mil wages on Gervinho, 3mil a year on Diaby for so long its embarrassing, 15mil or so on Arshavin only to bench him, Santos, etc, etc. Spending big or not has never been our problem, its been Wenger's inability of late to buy cheaply.

There are lots of overpriced players we could go out and buy who would also represent poor value for money and be fairly crap at Arsenal, Suarez being one of them. Higuain just happens to be one of the better strikers around who actually would be good enough that the fee wasn't poor value.

Injury free, I always suspected you might actually be funny :p

You can't blame wenger, he gives his target list to the people at arsenal that do the negotiations. If they don't agree or see value in the player they aren't going to throw money at it.

Just the same as Moyes will give players he's interested in and others will do the negotiations.

I think it just fits in with the constant story at Arsenal, promises of a huge war chest every season that comes to nothing and Wenger keeps his mouth shut. Until one person has sole ownership why would the other put his own money in?

Well if thats the case then Wenger will go. he wont renew his contract with arsenal if the board keep ****ing about with him. Just give RM 40m for Higuin ffs!!!

sick and tired of the board

Yeah, but Suarez is such a better player...

Yeah but Gervinho was worth that punt when he was scoring for fun in the french league with Lille. You've bought Giroud at 12mil, who looks like he's going to be snip. Like Bloodline said, damned if he does, damned if he doesnt. Arsenal are right not to spend 35mil on Higuain.

No they weren't right to take a punt for a total of 25mil on a player who wasn't good. I summed up his entire game in under 45minutes of watching him, 45mins in which he scored two goals yet EVERY single weak part of his game showed, every single weak part that now keeps him out of the team. I absolutely refuse to believe these traits weren't visible when he played in the french league. SCoring goals doesn't equal quality, scoring goals can be an indication of quality. It was patently obvious Gervinho wasn't any good so it wasn't a punt, it was a known poor choice and they made it. Higuain is a top notch striker, of that there is simply no question and it isn't a punt, thats what makes it better value.

Gervinho will likely cost £20mil + in the end to Arsenal, maybe more, but that is on a player who doesn't help improve the team, if you buy Higuain, that is a player who doesn't need replacing, who we won't find out is crap in 2 years and have to sell for a loss and by someone else.

If its right or not to buy Higuain is completely unknown. If we are buying someone near as good, or better for the same or less, then Higuain would be a waste. If we spend £40mil on Suarez, it would become absolutely the wrong choice to not have bought Higuain instead for £35mil.

Again its perspective, 10mil on someone who turns out as good as Higuain makes Higgy a bad buy at anything over 10mil, if we spend £40mil on the likes of Suarez, Higuain at 35mil becomes the far better option.

THe biggest problem is as with Gervinho and many others, I simply don't trust Wenger's judgement anymore. As for whose fault it is Higuain gets bought or not, its entirely illogical to say Wenger is blameless or entirely to blame. Usually a board will give a rough idea of what money can be spent by the manager. If they told Wenger he can spend 100mil, Wenger may have 4 players in mind and might easily of said to whoever is doing the deal that he doesn't want to go over a certain amount. Because at certain prices alternative options become better. IE Benteke is 20mil but you can get Higgy for 25mil, easy choice, when you've got Benteke at 20mil and Higuain at 35mil... maybe his choice changes, mine would.

Its also incorrect to assume Wenger isn't in direct control of negotiations, all managers and companies are different, we don't know who does the main negotiating at Arsenal, who has the final say, who gets too choose how much they spend on a single player, etc, etc.

Higuain is worth no more than £25 million imo. Sure maybe u expect to pay a bit more than your valuation of another couple of million. For me he is not world class and at £35 million u want a world class player. I know Jackson Martinez is available for around £25 million i have not seen him play but he is suppose to be the real thing. If Arsenal are priced out of Higuain and they drop out atleast they went for him and didn't want to overpay to much for him.

Higuain will probably be sold to Napoli and that probably means Suarez goes to Madrid. Honestly Arsenal need to bring in a top player this season or they will struggle again to break the top 4. There are always good players available it's not that bad if they do miss out on Higuain, so long as they sign someone else.

I get what your saying about Gervinho, but for the last few years Wenger has been trying to find cheap players who are actually rough diamonds, due to limited funds., so he took a punt on Gervinho hoping he was a rough diamond.

When did he find and polish the last diamond? Limited funds according to the board or wenger?

Don't Wenger and the Arsenal board go on (and on) every pre season about their transfer budget being a giant 'warchest' which can be spent if necessary by Arsene yet he never (ever) pays any real big money for any truly world class player. Either Arsene and the Board are just trumpeting the same thing, season in, season out to make the fans think they can afford the best players or the Champions League money they've been getting season in, season out is going somewhere other than into the transfer budget. You'd reckon that the EPL TV money and Sponsorships should cover most of the operating costs so where's the other money going? Is it really true that the owners are siphoning money out of the club as a return on their investment leaving the club itself run on a relative shoestring? That is compared to Spurs who have been splashing the cash recently, Manchester's and Chelsea.

With Spurs signings and Bale staying (if he was leaving there would be a bit more than just idle gossip about bids etc) there's a very real chance that Arsenal might not even make the top four this season. What will happen then? 'Sorry Arsenal fans, we've got no money now!?'

I remember watching Vieira, Overmars, Bergkamp, Petit, Pires and Henry ripping defences to shreds week in, week out with pace, vision, control and skill. What Arsenal players now can compare to that team? Cazorla perhaps, I doubt there are any others. Perhaps Wilshere when he's fit. Half the current Arsenal team wouldn't get into THAT team. If the Arsenal board had any backbone the first time Arsene didn't make the CL they would be best to politely tell him his time is up. Perhaps they should have done it 2 or 3 years ago.

TBH half of the united, chelsea or city team could not get into that team either.

I wouldnt say its a snip, I'd say it was a fair price for a striker who has one of the lowest conversion rates in the league, and one of the worst in European competition.
