Do Not Force ISP Filtering of Pornography and Other Content

Responsible department: Department for Culture, Media and Sport

The government is currently trying to push a bill forcing ISPs to provide opt-out pornography filtering, however this is an issue that fails to address any real problems.

Bad parenting is the real problem, and bad parents will simply allow the filter to be enabled and believe it protects their children, even though the filters are easily (even trivially) circumvented. Parents need to supervise and educate their children about internet use, not rely on filters of dubious effectiveness.

It also sets a poor precedent that objectionable content can be blocked at the ISP level in the name of protecting children, who are in fact being harmed more by poor parenting. Aside from content of a clearly illegal nature the government should not be forcing the presence of filters at all, but instead pushing to improve the involvement of parents in a child's life, and to promote education over flimsy, disruptive, and money-wasting "solutions".

Maybe worth signing and sharing around the old social sites?

wow that's exploding. went from 950 sigs when i signed when page reloaded its at 1019 is a few seconds haha.

Its not so much the porn ban that annoys me its just another area of my life thats affected by others inability to look after themselves :(

The pro ban ones have collectively acquired about 400 votes having been up 3 months :D

So where do we draw the line here? Are programs like Hollyoaks (yes they are not full of sex) but they infer this is happening, by rights should children not be stopped from being able to see such things?

It's foolish to think the internet is the cause of all this, I mean Myra Hindley didn't have the internet.

No, there are already parental controls on TV. There is the watershed and also I'm sure sky boxes for example default to lock (or block) age restricted films before the watershed. You need the pin to unblock them. Pretty similar really.

You could argue (at the control of parents) that such controls exist for the internet as well. I'm not talking about parental controls or watershed, Hollyoaks is on at 6:30. The watershed is joke.

Child porn is just the agenda to get their way to being able to one day censor the whole internet.

If Google being forced to block search terms used to find child abuse is going to prevent you from your pron I worry about you ^^

We don't know what terms exactly are being blacklisted though; plus this is merely round one of mass internet censorship based upon the brand of stick up the ass of whoever is in power at the time. Letting this happen is giving politicians carte blanche over what they think you should or shouldn't know about or have access to. **** that noise.

il bet mumsnet is in on this idiocy as well. so god only knows how much will get banned off the bat if it happens
