wonder how much riding of this bandwagon the PM will do on this load of tosh, probably bury some bad news in the papers tomorrow like a tax on air or something

Well done to the pair of them, whether the kid is a Prince, King, or just a bloke in the street, he'll mean the world to his parents and they'll never forget his arrival.

Much as it will set republican teeth grinding, there would seem to be every likelihood that in approximately 50 years from now the baby whose life has just begun will ride to Westminster Abbey in a golden coach to be crowned monarch in a line which can be traced back more than a thousand years to good King Egbert of Wessex.

A line, yes. Which was broken. But lets pretend it didn't happen.. ;)

Yes, lets stop being a monarchy like Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and Japan and become a Republic like Mozambique and Somalia.

Lol you forgot France, USA, Germany, China, Japan....... I could go on, in fact some of the most powerful nations in the world, it's time the Uk did away with these royal leeches and moved on from stupidness

Are you being serious? 1066? We've had two invasions William the Conqueror and William of Orange, notwithstanding the various families own internal squabbles and those dethroned and abdicated. Don't forget, England ran out of Monarchy. That's why a King of Scots became the King of England.

It hasn't run from Egbert unbroken, which I think was the impression given.

So, with that thought baby Cambridge, welcome and - without sacrificing the objectivity that is expected of every BBC correspondent - good luck!

From the Daily Fail:

"He will now take two weeks' paternity leave and accept the full entitlement of £136.78 per week"

Good on William there, hate to see the chap out of pocket in this time of his greatest need.
