First road traffic accident

Whilst the Audi driver was speeding, the van must have pulled out with very little space for the Q5 not to be able to decelerate from 120 to 80 quick enough.

I don't quite agree, if your driving that fast you should have the sense to look ahead and see that situation developing... And have the nous to appreciate the van driver won't be expecting you to be tanking up at 120, it's simply reckless to do that kind of speed unless traffic is very sparse, and you should ease up when approaching potential bottle necks.

Whilst looking for a hazard is good driving, but having to yield to someone who wants to go into your lane isn't necessary.

If I was driving at 80mph and someone wanted to move into the lane at a slower speed I wouldn't give the space up.

I wonder what speed the Sprinter Van was doing as well behind the lorry. Moving into the outside lane at 60mph I bet. Is calling for trouble even if the Q5 was doing 90mph.

Top score for avoiding an accident with the moron and top score again for getting stuck in helping the girl.

Hope they theyre the book, the table, the chair, the lot at the moron in the Audi.

I just hate the way the morons with no talent feel its acceptable to drive like that

It quite clearly is nessesary, especially if you take it upon yourself to drive at that kind of speed.. hence the crash. not giving a space up on purpose is aggressive, as the other driver may have simply had a lapse of concentration. Add excessive speed to the situation (he may well have checked his mirrors but wasn't able to judge that the audi was doing 120 rather than 90 from a quick glance) and you get carnage.

I would lay 100 percent of the blame on the audi, as you simply don't drive at that speed unless your confident you can avoid the above.
I've driven faster than that on motorways before but only when it's clear, if you approach any traffic at all you should significantly reduce your speed because you just can't react in time at that speed.

Saw something similar years ago, lorry clipped the corner of this van, and you'd have thought it was a toy with the way it rolled over!

Glad to hear you gave a statement, sound's like the audi driver was trying to bully his way down the motorway and came unstuck, just a shame he ruined someone elses day.

YOUR lane?

If I was driving at 80mph and someone wanted to move into the lane at a slower speed I wouldn't give the space up.

And herein lies the problem with so many of today's drivers, ignorance and arrogance. Much prefer driving on the continent now, more awareness, manners, and courtesy.

YOUR lane?

Yes I physically own it. What do you think it means?

On the continent people won't be pulling out into the fastest lane on the motorway at 60mph given the higher speeds people drive at 130km/h and then of course there are German Autobahns where that is only an advisory.

I find a lot of drivers in the UK have a very poor judgement of speed and especially closing speed. As for manners and courtesy, I don't know where you've been driving but driving courtesy in the UK (compared to the continent) is otherwise very good outside of motorways.

Lol at internet accident investigators.

The lorry shouldn't have moved into lane 2 if it was not clear and meant the van had to take avoiding action.
The van shouldn't have moved into lane 3 if it was not clear and meant the Q5 had to take avoiding action.
The Q5 shouldn't have been tanking it it he couldn't slow down quick enough.

Most people in the UK seem to forget that on your driving test if you do something that means someone else has to take avoiding action (e.g. pullout from side road onto an NSL and the person coming up behind has to slow down because of you) it's a fail... and also lots of people aren't all that great at estimating what speed someone else is doing and just go on the noise!

It's the a fail but it happens, a good driver will know when to expect lapses in judgement from others, and and slow down from 120 in good time.

Well done for remaining calm and getting some pics.

However,

"So I move out of the way and he blazes past he must have been going at least 120, I make a passing comment to the guys in my car about the speed and we move back into the fast lane. "

Stay in the left lane, don't hog lane 3 :p

As a relatively new driver judging closing speeds on vehicles on the motorway is very tricky or at least for me anyway, If you look in the mirror and see someone there you think to yourself they are doing XX miles an hour and estimate closing speed and carry out your maneuver if however they are in three digit speed the time that it takes for them to get to you is significantly shorter = accident.

Now who is to blame there, I would still argue its the plonker doing 120 when the limit is 70, you can understand doing 80 but 120?????

No excuse, throw the book at him and get him off the roads
