Haswell Overclock Thread

you guys r making me so unhapoy lol, i have an absolute turd of a chip and its my second replacement, i wna rip some1's head off god damit, i will return it till i get a decent one for sure :( 4.8, i cant even get 4.2 stable pffft

just delidded my cpu.

first i used mx4 and got actually worse temps than stock. i wasnt happy :(

bought some coolaboratory ultra and its, wait for it, 40 degrees cooler than it was before.. max core temp of 62 in prime. where before it was approaching 100.

this is bare die mounted, im sure if you delid and still use the ihs then mx4 is fine, but damn, i remounted it 3 times with the mx4 and still sucked.

so to conclude, if you are bare die mounting, then use coolaboratory, insane!!!

my cpu is now cooler than my i7 920 was hehehe, happy days

I managed an absolute deal on my gear so I couldn't refuse the upgrade...
Easy to swap out for my Rampage2, connections in the same place, popped on my Ek Supreme Plexi and away I went. Standard speeds under prime95 I was hitting 71 degrees... Not great. Stripped and clean the block as it was full of slimy crap, rotated it 90 to align the cooling channels with the CPU die, piped up the inlet and outlet correctly.... Had it the wrong way round since 2008... Touched up tim ;) Bled radiator and topped up, i had lots of air trapped in the Rad, not great. although i7 920 didnt go over 45degrees..disabled HT and booted. 40 under load, chip works really well but temps really start to hike up when you go over 1.250v on core. I was at 1.35v @ 4.8 last night but temps hit 85 and locked. If I play with it I'm sure I can stabilise it. Iirc I was at 1.25v for 4.6 and max temps of below 70. Just seems to me that the intel Tim just cannot transfer the heat fast enough onto the cooler. Toying with direct die contact, fairly happy with the chip all in all. Only gripe so far is sandforce1200......... SSD's were playing hide and seek every boot, much frustration ensued!

I've had a bit of trouble 8 Pack, managed to blend test prime ok at 2133 mhz for half hour but had some blue screens when trying to tighten timings later and kind of lost my way a bit after that. The blue screens seemed to cause some windows corruption as I could barely use internet explorer today, reinstalled it and seems ok now.

Pretty much back to square 1, will remove cpu overclock and do it properly this time. Any advice appreciated mate.

thats great!

what cooler are you using directly on the die?

Great Board!!! So your stable at 2133mhz??

Yeah, really impressed with the board, I've always tried to buy boards that clock well but I've never had anything as heavily featured as this, still trying to get my head around a lot of the UEFI options.

Up at 2400 on the memory now albeit with quite lose timings, will try and lower them today, should cas 10 be possible at 2400? Was hoping for 10,12,12,27 at 2400, and a lower tRFC, vdimm now at 1.65.

4.4Ghz @ 1.26v. My god this thing flies, I'm getting throttling in Intel burn test and Prime 95 though. Anybody else throttle in these progs?

I haven't had any throttling in prime, not run IBT. Not happy with temps overall though, particularly as I'm only 1.23 vcore, would like to increase clock to 5ghz but more voltage required for that so seriously thinking about delidding, need to decide on vice or razor method though!. If I do go ahead I'll re-mount naked using the EK precise mount kit with some coollaboratory liquid pro.

Very impressive. Have you considered trying to go for higher overclocks with you new low temps?

By the way, what did you have your vcore at before delid to achieve 4.8ghz?

vcore is 1.36 for 4.8. it goes up a lot for me after 4.7, which is happy at about 1.275ish

and yes its great, not sure i want to push higher, just happy having it running at the moment :)

Did you use the vice or razor method of removal? Only thing that worries me about the razor method is the vrm's being very close to the edge of the ihs area on one side, must have been difficult to avoid those?

vice, i didnt trust myself in the slightest with a razor.

it was very easy, few sharpish tabs and the top twisted off. it didnt fly off like i was expecting hehe.

i wasnt going to delid until someone in this thread mentioned it. within 15 minutes the lid was off ;).

but it really isnt worth doing until you get some coolaboratory, trust me on that one.

Just ordered some coollaboratory liquid pro, oc'uk didn't have the Ultra in stock, hopefully the pro version will do ok. Thanks for the advice.
