So I'm off to Scotland not this Friday but next. I plan to be crossing the Scottish border on the M6/A74(M) at about 11am. From there I really only have a few criteria:

1) We go to Glasgow
2) We go to Tobermory
3) We go to Fort William and stare at the base of Ben Nevis
4) We go to Loch Ness (probably on the way to Inverness)
5) we go to Edinburgh before going home on Sunday evening

I was thinking going up the east coast before hitting Kilmarnock and then going into Glasgow for the evening. Then on Saturday heading straight for tobermory, then on to Loch Ness and perhaps staying at Inverness that evening, then on the Sunday head down to Edinburgh before leaving at say 8pm.

Now that might turn out to be a crap route, I don't really know where the best driving roads are and I don't know where the best attractions/scenery is. I'd also quite like to go up a mountain on a cable car where your legs dangle down? Also last time I was in Scotland I went on a beach and in the sea and the sea had crabs running about, starfish all over the place and it was just a completely refreshing experience to be on a beach with that much wildlife. I've been told the west side is the prettiest. Can anyone help me out with some of these criteria and perhaps suggest things I shouldn't miss while in Scotland?

+1 for Edinburgh Fringe/Festival. I was there last weekend, as far as I know it's not in full swing yet but the atmosphere was really good. I'd go straight to Edinburgh then head north from there, possibly stopping back off in Edinburgh on the way home :)

Personally I would skip Glasgow and Kilmarnock.. not a lot to see. The Edinburgh fringe is on at the moment too, might be worth booking a show or two :)

Hmm, fair enough I did wonder if that was the case. Also when I say hitting Kilmarnock, I meant leaving the east coast to pass through and stay at Glasgow.

I'm kind of struggling to work out places we'll be able to stay, I haven't booked anything and it'll be me and 2 other lads. Worst case scenario will be sleep in the car but it would be nice to get a shower in the mornings.

I live near Kilmarnock and don't go there lol, Glasgow is ok but if its scenery u want head up the west coast, ullapool, Lochinver etc
Great campsite at Achmelvich nr Lochinver, bear in mind Edinburgh will be annoyingly busy, n then theres all them weirdy east coasters ;)

Good luck staring at the base of Ben Nevis. You have to hike up so far to even get it in view, and if you've gone that far you might as well go to the top ;)

(This information may or may not be correct as my memory is flaky, but I think any view from a road will be quite obscured).

coatbridge > cowdenbeath > fraserborough

If you dont have a heroin addiction after visiting those three places then its not a proper holiday :P

Skip Glasgow, because there isn't much too see?

Are you mad Gaz, saying that, you do live over there, so maybe you are ;)

Myself I would head up the west coast, so much nicer than the east coast..

All depends on what you want to do though? Big cities, mountain climbing, bars. clubs, historic sites, secluded beaches?

Fort william is nice. might be busy as its walking season and its the end of the west highland way.

on the way up stop off at inverary and oban.

if you get bored or just want to keep going, i would take a right and head up the a86 to aviemore and grantown-on-spay.

plenty to do along that route.

This is pretty much what I did last year. Glasgow for a night, then up the side of Loch Lomond through to Fort William, then Nevis, then up past Loch Ness to Inverness for the night. Then back down through Aviemore, up Cairn Gorm, continued on to Edinburgh where I stayed for 2 nights.

Was great. Loved it. Fantastic country. I try to visit Scotland each year now (This year I just did Edinburgh for 3 nights).

depends on time and budget but I'd go with something like this:
Drive to scotland
head towards Skye
explore Skye and then get ferry from uig to Harris
explore Harris/Lewis and take day trip to st Kilda
take ferry from stornoway to ullapool
Drive to fort William, stare at Ben Nevis wishing you were fitter etc
ft William to Inverness (via south of loch Ness road)
inverness to aviemore/ Cairngorm (cable car up cairngorm)
aviemore to Edinburgh via braemar
party like mad in Edinburgh and forget how much money you've just spent doing all of the above

I just cycled down from Fort William, around Mull and over to oban (plus a bit more, to taynuilt). Beautiful part of the country. Mull is worth a visit, but don't just see tobermory.
