Coffee Shop Business

Ah, see I've taken to cutting all that sugar out recently, but I get where you're coming from. Even the most lacking of coffees can be masked with enough sugar! :D

It costs more to employ three people than there hourly rate, holidays, NI contributions. Software for paying the wages/submissions. Then payments for accounts and book keeping.

Seems like a good idea in your area, as others have stated, make sure you look at all the costs and legalities that can add up to a hefty chunk of evil money sink.

Had a coffee shop in London (well the missus did) ran it for a few yrs, made a tidy sum. For a couple in our twenties at the time, we were doing very well. Allowed us to pay off our mortgage within 5yrs. Sold it and with the money made from paying off our home early and from the biz, we used it to financial stepping stone to move out to the US, and are currently living happily ever after.

Do it. If you don't give things a go, you'll never know. Good luck.

Make sure you check cost 1 billion times first before deciding on leaping into the shark infested pool that you want to make you rich!

I live in one of the smallest, crappest towns in West Sussex, and we have more coffee shops than anything else. Gerzoo coffee started up about 2 years ago and was almost unique in that it was an actually nice coffee shop, selling decent food. Think Cafe Nero but smarter. Their prices were probably better than the main coffee shop companies. Within a few months there was a Costa and now a Cafe Nero, and Gerzoo tanked badly and lies empty. There just aren't enough customers in most small towns to go round and in bigger places there's already too much competition.

You have got to be brave/mad to open a coffee shop IMO.

Everywhere has free WiFi these days, even my local laundrette. I find it most distasteful for service industry establishments to charge for WiFi tbh.

Yup, it's why the internet cafe has all but died.
Also why pay when you can just thether your phone these days.

You could try and open the first UK based Amsterdam style cafe ? :D

I don't understand the coffe shop business.

Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc sell **** coffee and get loads of customers yet smaller independents that sell very nice coffee don't do nearly as well.

Perhaps some of those smaller independents don't understand the coffee shop business either... not all of them are struggling either.
