Hey all

I have been given this phone but believe it's locked to O2.

now I believed when the contract ran it's course(phone came with contract), O2 can't legally keep the phone locked to their network.

I called them today and they quoted £15 to unlock it.

I know I can get it unlocked in the local flea market(not sure on cost) but is it safe to use these sort of people?

tell me your experiences please.

I wouldn't trust the local flea market people and I think Apple unlock the phone on behalf of o2 after you request it. Its a central database, many flea market people jailbreak it to allow other networks to play nice with the phone.

And some apps won't play ball with jailbroken iPhones, plus if the iPhone is using the latest version of iOS they won't be able to unlock it as there's (as far as I know) no jailbreak for 6.1.3

I think it's a con they can charge you for unlocking a phone after the contract has expired, by this point they've surely made enough money out of you

I got a 4S unlocked by them free, it was also ex-contract so it looks like it just depends who you get on the end of the phone, I'd phone them up again and see what happens, else you can also unlock them using various tools once it jail broken dependent on firmware.

Or just spend the £15 and know that it'll work perfectly.

As mentioned, don't get it done at a local shop - the only way to have it unlocked properly is via the mobile network who have a connection to Apple's central unlatching servers.
