Now I know why I don't want to become a PC Gamer!!!!

Recently I decided that it might be a good idea to stick a decent GPU in my system and start playing some games on my PC. I've had BFBC2 for a while but never played it so I thought I'd give it a go. To my suprise it worked quite well with the intel HD4000. So after a bit of single player I decided I would venture into multiplayer...........or at least I tried!!!

What the hell is up with Punkbuster! I understand it's a good idea but it just doesn't work! I've installed it and ran the set up for BFBC2 but it doesn't install any of the pnkbstrA.exe or the B.exe so it doesn't work. I've looked everywhere for a solution but found nothing.

This is what I was worried about, PC gaming is just not as simple as console gaming. I have friends who constantly complain about how their game doesn't work or "all of a sudden I can't join any servers!" so after trying to play my first game on the PC and found that it's just not as straight forward as it could be......I give up!

......unless someone can help me out!!!

You do get occasional blips that ruin things but it's far easier than it used to be. A couple of weird things I had recently:
  • Bought a new sound card, if I ran any Steam game while MSI Afterburner was running they crashed on loading...huh?
  • Dota 2 didn't work until I fiddled with my router settings, despite every other game working on PC and consoles

Just weird stuff occasionally, it'll never be as easy as consoles.

PC gaming isn't for the majority of the computer illiterate masses who should stick with increasingly dumbed-down consoles.;)

Regarding the BFBC2 issues:
The old version of punkbuster included in BFBC2 and BF2 doesn't work properly in Windows 7 and definitely not at all in Windows 7 x64.

You have to download PbSetup.exe from somewhere, update and select the games manually.

I consider myself to be fairly good when it comes to computers but this has really annoyed me. I know what the problem is. I should have a pnkbstrA.exe and a pnkbstrB.exe in my BFBC2 folders. But when I manually update Punkbuster it just doesn't install them!!!!

Download the uninstall Programe

On Some Windows 7 64bit pnkbstra.exe & pnkbstrb.exe get installed to C:\Windows\System32 / C:\Windows\SysWOW64
Also Remember when installing to the run the installer As Administrator so it can change the files needed also some Anti-virus software might block punkbuster from installing or run I have had that a few times :/

Hope this helps

Yup OP, PC gaming is not trouble free.

The trade-off is that you can do things on PCs consoles can only dream of.

You have to decide for each game if it's worth your time getting it to run. Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle, I find. There is normally a solution on the net if you can be bothered to hunt it down.

But I feel your pain. When you want to relax you don't want to be fixing broken/conflicting software, drivers, etc.

Yeah my brother is the same. He tries to become a pc gamer, but everything goes wrong for him. Then he tries to fix it and makes it 100 times worse. But i enjoy the whole faffing about. Done it since the mid 90's so im used to it all.

It's a lot easier nowadays with Steam and the like. Granted, there are the exceptions but it's nothing like the days when you used to have to run memmaker and make different boot discs for different games.

In a strange way I miss those days :o

Try and get fallout new Vegas working with a load of mods - it does away with all that easy to run business (thank god for NMM and other clever mods though!).

Generational difference - examples given above.

In my day we wouldn't be beat & would overcome the challenge, These days it's way to hard OMG bin it & go console. :D

Got to agree with that - unfortunately I'm stuck with a PS3 at the moment due to space/money/time constraints, but I do miss the days of tweaking ini files and registry settings, installing obscure patches and certain driver versions in order to those few extra fps (or even the game to launch!) :p

I like that PC gaming is not as accessible as consoles it keeps a lot of the window lickers away, not that I think all console gamers are dumb but if people can't search for a fix on the net for what generally are minor problems, chances are they probably should stick to consoles anyway.
PC gaming now days is easy compared to a few years ago & with even the most inexperienced people able to solve most problems you would encounter with just a quick search on google.
