Lower back pain

5 and nearly 3...

They used a plastic mop handle, but if they carry on (I am determined they will) I'll get a 6ft aluminium trainer bar or something. :D

Just teaching them to snatch.

Start off straight, chest up, tummy in... stick bum out, jump and lift the bar over head.

Their responses to normal coaching cues is hilarious by itself (daughter initially wound up with shoulders hunched back, waist forward in a Mr. Bean dance pose), and because they can just move into whatever position is required (no mobility issues), it's just fascinating to watch...

Not the worst thing I've ever seen. There really isn't much of a second pull though, you never even get your hips through to neutral never mind extension.

Slow down your first pull. Think of the positions you're meant to be in and the weight distribution you should have on your feet at the various points of the lift.

That's it, second pull. It's actually really getting me down, I just cannot get my head around it, regardless of how many videos I watch, I can't put it into action. It's frustrating me so much. I want to progress onto the snatch but again, I can't get the second pull right.

I seem to have no mind-muscle connection between my bloody hips :p

Watch the videos in the "How to Clean" thread. They are very basic explanations of how to get hip drive right and working before getting addicted and spending the rest of your gym life workout out how tog et evey last bit of hip extension out of the movement.

Start from a hang. That will force you to work the second pull. :)

Edit: also don't forget you're trying to do the two (three?) hardest lifts there are, and this takes time. Lots of it. :)

As Mrthingx said, start at the second pull, grab the bar, deadlift it up nicely, then hip hinge to the top of where a 1st pull would finish and practice from there.

Again, you no doubt will need to drop the weight.

Do you work for Core Cambridge or have I imagined that?

No, I used to (and occasionally still do when he's not being an old man! :D) train with the guy who founded Core Cambridge, and occasionally (again) have training sessions with their Olympic lifting coach.

So I describe myself as a wannabe lifter, rather than somebody who actually knows anything. :)

Difficult question...

I've trained with three of their coaches, and I know that - whilst they're all pretty awesome - one knows how I do things and so is more helpful (if that makes sense?). The three I trained with (or was coached by) were all hired by the guy who runs the gym in my office, and he has pretty brutal/refined standards, so I have utmost confidence in them.

If you want an "intro" to power/weight lifting, then I would go to them without question - I don't think there's anything better publically in Cambridgeshire. If it still costs £60/hour or whatever, I suppose it depends on what you consider 'value'. I have been happy to pay that for specific weightlifting instruction, but that's a potentially different kettle of fish...
