*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

Obviously I would love it if it was launched earlier :) My Christmases would all come at once if the PS4/Xbox One launched within a week of each other! :D

No way it'll be October.

It's possible, although I agree that it's not probable. I still think Sony are waiting to hear from MS as to when they are going to release. It seems that Sony are doing this for every bit of information they put out. Pretty clever as the sentiment on a lot of sites from fans is very pro Sony at this point because they pretty much do the opposite of what ever MS announce! :p

My source (secret of course) says the PS4 will be out a week on Friday

i see it as plausible what hes saying. if this person was testing then they would have signed an NDA. so it might either be a professional thing or brought in as market research. ive done it from time to time and sonys office in london for a bit of fun and some cash. got to play some games but obviously wasn't allowed to talk about it

The size of the thing worries me. People have been bashing the XB1 for overclocking the GPU, saying it will lead to over heating. But the PS4 has more power in a much smaller package. That just doesn't sit right with me. The exclusives look better on PS4, infamous looks truly orgasmic, but will it melt?

So he is believing someone that willingly ignores a legally binding contract?

Sony are hardware makers MS are not. I'd be surprised if there are heat issues.
There are undoubtedly risks associated with such a small, neat package, and the MS approach -- bigger box and external power -- makes a lot of sense... especially to a company like MS who are still smarting from the financial damage done by the red ring of death.

The PS3 was hardly perfect in its first iteration, but at least it was reliable compared to the 360 v1, so hopefully Sony know what they're doing... despite the fact most of the company makes a loss. :-)

While I'm here, I'm a bit worried about myself. I pre-ordered a camera the other day, as well as the box itself. I may be getting infected with something dangerously close to over-enthusiasm... or maybe it's just pure curiosity and the knowledge this will be a "once in 7-10 year" purchase.

Source has to be kept secret but has no reason to lie and I can confirm were at Sony UK today
Unless your secret sauce is seriously senior I doubt anyone at Sony UK is handing out worldwide exclusive NDA information material to random bod no312 no matter what they are there for. Given the secrecy and sensitivity of this sort of stuff I'd be very surprised if more than a handful of people at Sony UK even know.

indeed, given the similarity of the underlying hardware there's some fundamental basics to take account of around power = heat generation = need to cool = airflow. To run silent/reliable you either need lots of space for adequate airflow and large slow spinning quiet fans, or less space and fast potentially noisier fans/airflow.

I'll be honest and say I've not looked into it, I suppose the other option is to use something like an all metal case as an effective large heatsink to dissipate heat or maybe there's something we don't know about the electronics that means it has careful power control options to minimise heat generation in the first place. I suppose they could just make it in a way that even if it gets thermonuclear hot it's not effected and it has very high heat tolerance.?

Perhaps MS have just massively over engineered the cooling characteristics to be absolutely certain of no RROD/noisy console repeat?

personally i dont think either console should suffer from heat issues, i say this because they say the ps4 gpu is just slightly better than a 7850 and now you can buy 7850's that are passively cooled, although this probs wont be the case with ps4 as it has a cpu on the chip too. the cpu is one of the latest low power things from amd. all the tech is like so new low powered, efficient and cool unlike the hot older gen. so hopefully both wont have any issues.
