Looking into going to Hurghada for New Year, anyone been recently? Hoping to fit a trip to Luxor in but people keep trying to put me off, suggesting I'm unlikely to come back alive :)

I've just been to sharm el sheikh and it was fine, the foreign office are advising people not to travel to Egypt except for the Red Sea resort areas. I'd maybe knock Luxor on the head though.

You never think it might be for the awesome service and really nice people at the tourist resorts as well as superb treatment for low prices?

you'll more than likely come back alive. but with a stomach infection.

On a political level you should probably avoid, you may get caught up in some kind of Coup d'état or something.

Seeing as you actually had to ask the question, I'd give you a 2 out of ten chance of survival.

Aslong as you stay away from the main parts of Cairo and Alexandria you'd probably be ok (probably be ok there too unless you were wandering haplessly into the wrong areas) but I'd probably look to going elsewhere at the moment unless you really really want to go to Egypt, things are on a bit of a knife edge at the moment and could kick off or stabalise at any time. Which is a shame coz it can be a really interesting country to visit.

Haha! Great joke! But true, it is cheap and the diving/snorkelling is great.

Egypt just seems cheapest for a bit of winter sun, was also hoping for Valley of The Kings on my birthday!

Still mulling it over, cheers for the answers, just think I need one person to say it's fine so my family have someone to blame if I die :)

I flew into Hurghada recently then down to Port Ghalib and onto a Liveboard but from what I seen on my travel's no problem what so ever.

If you do end up in Luxor make sure you get to the Temple of Karnak. It is truely awesome. Better than Valley of the Kings imo

I went to Cairo about 8 years ago. I thought it was an amazing place to visit. Not sure what it would be like now. But I'm glad I got to visit it.
