Insurance when buying a car - how do YOU do it.

Hi chaps,

Getting a step closer to getting my 350z (here I am tempting providence...), and have short listed a few to look at.

Once I've found "the one" - what would you suggest the best way of getting it home is?

Day insure (expensive but quick).

Or

Phone the company (I've found several good quotes so far) that I want, and wait for them to sort it, leaving it at the person's/dealer's (depending on which one I get) place, and collecting it in a few days?

Or should the insurance company be able to provide me with insurance there and then?

What would you do?

You can get 'proper' insurance instantly, and most companies will even email you a cover note.

Or, assuming you are definitely buying it, phone your insurance company now with a view to initiating the changes automatically on the date you collect.

I just call up in advance, get a quote or verify an internet quote, tell them to save it and call up once i've bought the car to get it started. Can normalyl be done instantly and they'll email a cover note

Cool - it's a lot slicker than it used to be - I've had a company car for so long, that I'm used to people doing it for me. I just remember it taking days for the paperwork to be sorted out (proof of no claims etc...).

Last time I bought a car, I had the insurance from my old one transferred to it. There was a period of 24 hours where I was covered on both cars to ensure I could legally drive both (traded it in).

This, there is usually a grace period of a few days to a week for any transfer. Then pay any additional preium required. It's pretty painless but I've never had to claim in this scenario (or ever, touch wood).

I don't currently own a car - so no transfer will be taking place.

I just wanted some reassurance that insurance companies work with 21C technology. It seems they do. :) I've got a copy of my thousands of years of NCB on my phone, so can send that to an insurer electronically at any time - so hopefully it should be a case of just telling them to "flick the switch".

Cheers chaps. :)

Yeah have a quote in place with the insurer, then you can just phone them up from the seller's house if you decide to buy and pay them over the phone without having to go through all your details again. Should be able to get instant cover that way, they normally give you a few weeks to send in proof of NCB, etc.

I've just bought a 350Z and picking it up today! Possibly got one you might have been looking at if you're in my budget!

Best bet is call up an insurer with all the details about the car before you plan on driving off with it, then once you get the car and shake hands, call them up again, retrieve the quote and pay up in relatively no time.

A lot of companies will allow you to cancel within 14 days and you get that money back (less an admin fee perhaps).

How long has it been since you had those NCB? As some companies don't accept them after ~2 years.

Budget is around 7.5-8k. :)

Are you on the 350z forum yet?

King - perfect that sounds like a plan - I have a couple of quotes ready to go (they last 14 days but can 'renew' the quote if I need more time to look).

Davey - I checked, and because my cover is continuous (just changed from a private to company scheme) they were happy to honour it. :)

Nick - by the sound of things it's a non issue now anyway. It's just in the past I've done it that way so I could get the car/bike home ASAP - seems as though there's a better way of doing it. :)

You'll want to get the quote referenced in advance. The big companies increase the price closer to the start date you get (on insurance comparison sites at least).

I might not be purchasing from a dealer so that might be a bit difficult!

However it is a great idea too so thanks Perro for posting that. :)
