Tailgaters New Offence From Today

Hopefully this stops people from leaving the left lane wide open down the motorway, whilst going on 60-70 down the middle and forcing us to jump two lanes around this middle lane hog and then back to the left.

I highly doubt it because speeding is more enforced than such 'petty' crime on the roads, especially when it requires a police to enforce it, vs a camera.

How do you prove if someone is middle lane hogging ? How much time/miles travelled would have to be spent in the middle lane before it is deemed hogging ? What if you are overtaking a load of trucks ?

This is a stupid idea people just need to learn how to drive properly. That said I spend most of my time in the outside lane :p

But seriously I find it highly unlikely you could be fined and receive points because of "hogging the middle lane". I would just argue and argue until they gave up.

Sir you was hogging the middle lane
Prove it
Sir The traffic cameras saw you
I was over taking someone
Sir There was no beside you
There was but I got past them and was safely preparing to join the inside lane

and so on and so on.

Can't say I ever remember being tailgated on a motorway. If somebody's coming up from behind at a fair lick, I get out of their way as quickly as is safely possible. Just seems like common courtesy.

How is the "middle lane hogging" offence described? What size gap in traffic in the inside lane becomes "too big"?

Not fussed over tailgaters but the middle laners really **** me off!

The guy I car share to work with just sits in the middle and in and out of the right. When I drive, If theres a space on the left, get the blady car in it. And the other day he has the cheek to say "you move around too much". No! I pay attention and use the motorway like it was designed!

It's the ones who sit there with at least 5 car lengths between themselves and the car behind on the inside lane whilst maintaining the same distance and speed as the gent on the inside which he "claims" he's overtaking when it's clear he's just bumbling down the middle lane just acting like a tit!

If they're not overtaking and they're in the middle lane, they're in the wrong. It's fairly obvious. Commonsense suggests you wouldn't weave between lanes, but if it's taking >1 minute to pass between slower vehicles, you're probably in the wrong lane.

When its clear you just couldnt be bothered to move over and had the thought "Ill just stay here till I catch up with them".

This.

It is fairly obvious but there is no reason why you can't go into the middle lane anticipating an overtaking manure against say a convoy of trucks. What if that just so happens to be over a camera ? Would you get fined for that ? I would just love to know how they can enforce this unless they just have police buzzing up and down motorways.

I'm really not sure what you're getting at here? If you're in for an overtaking manouevre you should be going faster than the vehicle you're overtaking, in which case what's the problem?

The bottom line here is twofold:

1. Enforcement will be weak anyway, there are far fewer traffic cops on the roads these days than there were 20 years ago.
2. If you don't drive like a **** anyway, what is there to be worried about?

I was just curious as to how they enforce it was all :) It just seems like a stupid law with no real specifics which makes it pointless and open to interpretation.
