Hey guys my house mate is looking to build his own pc mainly for gaming. Just looking for some component lists for his build looking at around £550, it would be greatly appreciated.

cheers andy

Hmm. I'd rather push up the budget and get a decent board. That one will poo its pants if you put an 8320 in it.

That's why I said yours is more future proof ;)

By the time I upgrade (personally) I have to buy a new mobo/cpu rather than using a stronger cpu from the same socket, so for me anyway there would be no point paying more in case I upgraded to a 8320 and would be better off with a better GPU.

OP knows the pro's and con's anyway, so depends what suits his friend :)

You never know though, a couple of threads have come up recently with people on low end 970 boards wanting to put an 8320/8350 in. You've also got the fact that even with the 6300, it'll be a bit limited - no heatsinks on the VRMs is bad news. Overclocking probably won't be possible, etc.

The 670 would be nice, so maybe the budget can stretch a bit to accommodate the better board.

A mild overclock should be do-able I'd have thought, but the better board would be much better if he wants a higher OC.

For me it's never been cost effective to thrown in a stronger CPU in a previous mobo, but some do like a upgrade path, just not something I'd pay for personally.

Would be usrful to know what games and will he be overclocking, as intel could be better.

An overclocked 6300 is effectively an 8350 for many games :) It's a really good processor for the money. I'd say that if you want a higher end card like the 670 you want the ability to have a bit more grunt behind it, and the higher board would give that.

Unless he wants it for WoW exclusively, the 6300 is pretty much better all round than an i3.

You don't need to go much higher. I'd just get the Asus 970 board I listed over the Gigabyte one, as the Gigabyte board isn't any use for overclocking and you wouldn't be able to stick an 8320 in later. Otherwise potty's spec is fine, and it'd give a great system.

There are loads of 670 deals at the moment mind you, it's changing every day.
