My 6970 fan is stupidly loud and 1 minute into furmark my temperatures are hitting 80c. I have opened the card and cleaned it all up and added new paste which was arctic silver 5, still overheating, I then tried mx5 paste. Today i gave the copper heatsink and good soft sand to make it all smooth and used noctua thermal paste, still overheating.

Now i was going to buy a accelero twin turbo

I have no idea why but the accelero twin turbo is really pricey!, i remember paying only £30 for one. I will have to pay between £40 - £60 to get the card running cool with a aftermarket cooler.

Is it worth it or should i just sell the card on ebay and move onto a later model.

Stupid card!.

Please don't use furmark, just load gpu-z in the background and set to show max gpu temps and game as normal then see what max temps were

Could also apply some new thermal paste on gpu core, pref mx4

I have just benchmarked heaven and was hitting 82c i also did some research and this looks to be normal. I just wish the fan was more quiet.

80c is not overheating. It's hot but not overheating.

My 6950 2GB has one of those Accelero Xtreme coolers, it's very cool and very quiet. I never see above 65°C gaming, with fans on 12%.

Yep that sounds about right mate, exact same temp as my 680 :p
Yeah the 6970 wasn't really a silent card.

about right mate however i have my 2 6970's overclocked

at 980mhz on core stock on memory thats with 1.3V :-) plus at 80oc i have my fan custom profile at 90% fan and 85oc at 100% fan. (heaven bench though I dont run furmark as its unrealistic and just designed to kill graphics cards)

in game though cards sit around 69-75oc

80c is not hot for a 6970 as I have the same , I was told by the maker of this card the max temp is around 105c but try not to let it go above 95c .
mine was hitting 92c in some games on a hot day so I used afterburner for a custom fan profile , and yes the card is loud if it is a stock ref cooler .
do not use furmark as it is design to stress your gfx card to breaking point
