Spec for upcoming first build. Opinions appreciated!

if i was spending £500 i dont think id be buying tech a couple of gens old.

If you have the case etc and only need the core components my money would be going on a haswell build.

Then if money permits buy the the MSI 7950 thats available to pre-order @ £190

A decent after market cooler can be had for ~£30 these days as well if you want to overclock (or not suffer criticism for using a stock cooler on a k series chip).

Just because someone tells you your getting things at a discount doesn't automatically make it good value for money.

if your buying over an extended period of time it makes no sense (to me at least) to buy old parts off your mates.

A new motherboard with warranty etc can be bought for the same price your buying the old one for, and you can grab some new RAM for an extra £10 which again will be new and have warranty.

Fair enough a CPU will cost you more, but if your doing it over time just take a little longer and buy something newer. You might even drop a decent deal as overclockers are allways doing discounts etc.

If it were me, i would save up the money and buy when things were on offer.

I don't want to sound negative or put you off here, just giving my opinion.

I'm with Potty there.

You could take some bits for sure, like the soundcard, the PSU, and the optical drive, but I'd get a new board/CPU/RAM.

:D

For most users a soundcard is not really needed these days, as on board is usually pretty good, but depends on how into audio the OP is.

Not needed no, but the sound quality from a discrete card like that is miles better than any standard onboard set up. It depends on the cost, as new they're only £25 or something.

And I do agree with you when you make the right suggestions ;)

I think that's quite an overstatement to be honest, with most peoples speakers / ears the difference will be nearly negligible these days.

If you have very good speakers or a problem with the on board sound, fair enough :)

"right suggestions" are usually down to perception, what we think the OP needs and personal biases ;)

It's not an overstatement, but it does matter if you're on cheap plastic £10 speakers or something a bit better. My speaker set up is only £40 or so, and the difference between on board and my Creative card is astonishing.

And it was slightly tongue in cheek, regarding right suggestions :p

Yeah I guessed ;) I'm just saying there are usually a lot of right answers, but depends on what the OP thinks :D

I've given some wrong answers too mind you :p But as it's a forum by the end of these threads any hopeless suggestions have been weeded out :D

On the topic of my speaker set up, it's a Logitech 5.1 surround sound system and it kicks out some serious bass :D I think I'm gonna keep the Intel i7-920 but I am seriously considering buying the mobo and RAM new so any suggestions on what would work well with the rest of the spec would be greatly appreciated. As for budget, for the mobo my limit is £150 and the limit for RAM is £60 for at least 8GB. I also don't think I'm going to bother with the SSD now and just stick to 1 or 2 HDD's

My honest suggestion: That is a really poor choice.

You'll be paying a lot more for that CPU than you could get it on a known auction site.

£90 + £150 + £ 60 = £300 Yet it will be blown away by this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £119.99
1 x Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) £53.99
1 x Thermalright True Spirit 120 REV A (BW) Performance CPU Cooler £24.98
Total : £288.95 (includes shipping : FREE).

Upon further investigation I'm finding it very difficult to find a mobo that is compatible with the i7-920 anyway. Back to the drawing board I guess... Thanks for all the help anyway :)
