Bradley Manning - 35yrs in the slammer :(

Lol at your angry face and then disgusting treatment.
What do you expect, laws to be ignore? He committed a several very big crimes and has been convicted.

Very stupid if he thought it was going to end any other way.

Ultimately, Manning's and Snowden's leaks will achieve nothing. And will achieve nothing at huge personal cost to themselves.

Did anyone expect this outcome to be different?

He broke a number of very serious laws. Why is anyone surprised by this?

Yes he did what he did for good reasons, I have a lot of respect for people like him that are willing to make such sacrifices, however what he did was illegal.

35 years for a crime he could have been put to death or served the rest of his life in a cell for is rather lenient.

As for what he did, he broke an oath to his country and did so knowing what would happen to him so the sentence is fitting IMO.

I'm of the opinion there are things that should not be for public consumption.

IMO the leaks that are available, of which there are many not just from Manning and Snowden, are a pre-cursor to something huge.

It is only a matter of time before this type of "justice" and control implodes.

I didn't expect anything different, I had hoped it would be though.

I'm sure it could have been a longer sentence for him, especially if the prosecution say they were pushing for 60 years. The US does have a parole and good behaviour system, so I would imagine he won't actually serve 35 years anyway.

It is a tough one with him though. The US Government needs to send a strong message to stop people doing similar and make it clear that they can't have their secrets known. On the other hand though, he bought some information of worldwide public interest that showed how they have effectively covered up and allowed the deaths of innocent people.

Lucky man has escaped the firing squad. He knew the consequences of his actions and now can enjoy them. Future traitors can take heed.

Good.

Break the law, do the punishment. Simples.

I agree totally.

If breaking the law is so punishable then how come those who broke the law in the leaks have not been brought to account? Manning is simply the messenger over a host of cover ups.

Similarly Snowden simply told the world just how much the nsa breaks the law despite them stating publically how is it fair that the us is hunting Snowden down and not those in the nsa?

Imagine instead of American revealing US secrets it was a Chinese or Russian revealing their own respective country's state secrets.

The Chinese guy would probably be end up in front of a firing squad and the Russian guy wouldn't get so far as to trial before he is overdosed on radiation !

Innocent people are killed in all wars :/ As terrible as it is, it is inevitable in any conflict that innocent people/civvies will die.

I'm not familiar with all the material Manning leaked, but I do remember the footage of people being gunned down from a chopper.

This kind of thing is not new, and happens a lot, and it's not surprising that the powers that be don't want such footage in the public domain. But you always have to assume it is happening, regardless.

Ultimately, war is not nice. There isn't always a gentleman's code of conduct when your life is at stake. I'm not sure what Manning hoped to achieve with his leaks, but what he has achieved is 35 years in the slammer.

And no one at all should be surprised, least of all Manning himself.

Telling the truth is the ultimate crime against the state.

Yes he broke laws but put that aside for a second and all he really did is let people know the truth, like the collateral murder video. Of course nothing has been done to the killers....

No justice at all.

I'm sure he did know the consequences of his actions, making what he did even more important and worthy of respect, hopefully it won't deter future "traitors" from stepping forward when they realise their governments are going too far.

It takes real bravery to do what Manning did, knowing what would happen to him if he did it. The only thing he is a traitor to is a corrupt government.
