Win 8 Pro Upgrade Edition DVD - Does this "Free Up" my 7?

Hi all

Just a quick question:

If I go for the DVD of Windows 8 Pro Upgrade and put it on this PC, which currently has Windows 7 Premium Retail on it (DVD), does that mean I can put this copy of 7 onto a second machine?

Basically, does buying the W8 Upgrade free up W7 for another PC?

Ill delete what ive said as clearly its quite a controversial matter and probably shouldnt be discussed on here although it has been quoted so there was probably no point in me deleting it.

it may activate and all that. but if u break the license terms, your be running an unlicensed OS.

if the OP has win7 then gets win8 upgrade, the win7 license can't be used while using the win8 upgrade license.

If MS activates the key that's down to them imo. Truth be told they couldn't really give a toss about about individual licences really as long as it's not pirated. They want the big corporate contracts and the more people who use the os at home the better to drive that forward.

They've never policed the upgrade keys too much.

but on forums etc people should give legal advance which goes by the license terms..

if the person takes that legal advance or not thats up to that person,

if people wanna give advance which doesn't go by the license terms it shouldn't be done on a public forum tbh

Who's to say that he's not upgrading from that Retail license for XP he bought twelve years ago and needs a bit of "tarting up"?

There is absolutely no reason to assume that just because he's performing a clean-install utilizing upgrade media and an upgrade key that he's not upgrading from an older license of windows.

I have this exact same issue. Actually it is like this:
- My friend has Windows XP on an old PC.
- My friend bought a new PC, wants to "upgrade" it.
- We have a Windows 8 upgrade DVD, but of course Windows XP is not on that machine as the new machine has no OS currently. The older machine will be destroyed probably as it's age old.
- So, how do I go about upgrading both her PC, and her windows license at the same time?

I have 2 choices, 1 being to download windows XP, find her license key, install it with that and then upgrade. The other is to do the work around as linked to. Will there be any difference? Is she going to run into problems down the road?

if the xp os is oem then it's tied to the old machine and can't be transfered. therefor you've got no valid license to upgrade from.
if the xp os is retail then it'll be fine to transfer it to the new machine and upgrade to win8 or do a clean install of win8

Not really. This loophole has existed since XP, and MS still give you the option to re arm your os install ever since.

but most people have to lie when you call MS and if u have to speak to a real person to activate/ transfer a oem os to a new system, 99% of the time if u tell them the truth most likely they will say no
