Which budget SSD?

Have fancied an SSD for ages, but my hand has been forced by the fact my BF3 load times are so slow, by the time Conquest loads up all the initial flags have gone!

So, I only need it to run windows 7, and a few games. Probably just BF3, BF4 when it comes out and Crysis. Is 60GB going to be ok?

My mobo is a bit old hat and I think SATA speeds are 3GB rather than the modern 6 so will that limit me?

I've been looking at this currently on offer: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-019-CR&tool=3

Now the read/write speeds are about half that of the big boys, will I still notice a definite improvement over spinning discs?

Thanks

You should do.

Your Sata interface and the slightly "old" SDD technology in that model will not provide the speed of a higher end SSD on Sata III, but you should get a nice improvement without breaking the bank.

That's exactly what I'm after! I'll upgrade again when monies are more available, and would normally just wait until they are but joining a server 30 seconds after everyone else is really grating me!

Thanks for the reply!

To be honest I personally would go with a 120gb ssd as a 60gb one sill fill up really fast. You will be lucky to get on game on and an OS before it gets near capacity.

To get the most out of an ssd and for it to run at optimal speeds you need to save around 10% of the drive free. This means in real terms a 60gb drive is only really 54gb.

Just a heads up.

The OP would be fine with ~54gb of space. Windows 7 + updates and basic apps (Antivirus, Flashplayer etc) is about 30gb tops. ~24gb should be enough for at least two if not three games. The existing hard drive can be used to store any extra data and install other apps.

I agree that 64gb is a bit tight, but it would do what the OP wants it to do. And for the low cost it will deliver a decent improvement in overall performance.

64 is definitely tight, but I only concentrate on 1 or 2 games at a time so should be doable I hope.

If you use CCleaner and remove downloaded Windows updates to keep your drive usage down, you might be okay. 120GB would certainly make your life simpler.

put the extra for a 128gb, double the space

you can make do with a 64gb but you have to manage it closely which is a pain

heres my 60gb corsair gt,and that's with all the space saving tweaks applied, system restore off/pagefile reduced ect:(

Min win 7 install, Origin (BF3 only) and a few apps that can't easily be moved to the non OS drive only leaves 54gig of my M4 SSd left.

Don't think a 60gig SSD will be enough.

M4 regulary for for around £50 on the members market

Hmm. Perhaps you guys are right. Think I better hold on for a 120/128gb. Shame I can't access the MM yet, gunna take forever :(

Sorry to Hijack but i'm also looking at getting an ssd soon and saw that these are on offer "Corsair Force LS Series 120GB" but i can't seems to find any reviews at all:confused:
Anyone able to comment on them?

Here you go, just what the doctor ordered.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Kingston 120GB SSDNow V300 Drive SATA 6Gb/s 3 2.5" (7mm height) Solid State Hard Drive - (SV300S37A/120G) £68.99
Total : £68.99 (includes shipping : FREE).

Not a bad suggestion. Going for 120GB would certainly remove the "hassle" of trying to manage space (as long as you don't get tempted to install more games !).

I`ve just taken a look at the size of the folders for my steam games.

Bioshock Infinite 16.9GB

Skyrim 10GB

Fallout New Vegas 9.22GB

A couple of games and a reasonably "lean" OS + apps install should mean that 2 games is not really a big problem. However, as others have stated, it would be worth spending the extra to get more capacity if you can afford it. You'd have to keep your SSD tidy if you went for just 64GB.

Thanks Bru i'll have a look.
The Corsair is faster apparently though?

On paper, probably faster.

In your PC ? Doubt you'd notice much difference.

I'd spend ~£85 on a Samsung 840 Evo, based on my experience with Samsung SSDs. The Kingston, Corsair or a Samsung would all be fast, it just a matter of deciding on how much you want to spend, brand reputation and warranty on offer.

Is 60GB going to be ok?

Noooooo! 60GB is never enough for a home PC boot drive especially when you start talking about games., you'll regret it sooner rather than later, get 128GB min.

Its ok for a home server boot drive where the OS is installed and then not really touched again and additional applications are rarely installed but for a PC you work and play on, nah!

I bought a 64GB SD card to backup my Mac's Win8 Parallels VM thinking that would be plenty. That Win 8 installation is now at 58GB without really trying (and without any games).
