***Official Intel Haswell Thread***

Finally got my haswell setup built, currently reinstalling windows. 4770k and asus maximus formula along with the other parts in sig.

Very nice. Just been reading through the overview on Asus, looks like it has some really nice features. Was surprised to see it comes with a steel plate to go at the back of the mobo, to stop it bending.
Look forward to your opinions on the board, maybe do a review if your not to busy. :D

Enjoying my Haswell, I thought now for the O/C soon found myself bumping up the voltage but atm think I may have hit a brick wall.

With volts at 1.31 at 4.5ghz i get 124 stop codes on Blue screen after around 7 mins.

Temps are around 61 - 68...

Should I go for more vcore ??

Using a H110 cooler and the room is quite cold :)

Or could it be something else I have just bumped up the multiplier and changed nothing else on my Gigabyte Z87-OC not even flashed it ( if there is a new bios )

Well after my failed / succesfull flash. Still no real difference prime 95 crashing it at 1.31 volts. Really annoying as got to 4.3 with not voltage change now looks like I might be hitting my glass ceiling.

Sounds like a lot of people may have the same wall as me. I'm at 1.25v @ 4.3GHz stable. I may be able to achieve a lower voltage, but haven't managed to get 4.4 stable yet. I didn't put much effort in though, I just tried it before I left for holiday and it wasn't stable so switched back to 4.3. I'm surprised how seriously people take the OC'ing because for all intents and purposes, this thing will perform like a rocket even at stock lol.

Aye, i am quite happy running at 4.4 4.3. But in my mind 4.5 is like some shinny figure and it will be mine :)

That being said I am running at 4.5 atm and if I avoid prime I expect it will be fine :)

Mmm, YouTube videos appear to be the real Haswell killer xD It's kind of funny when you think about it - most people seem to only find out that their OC is slightly unstable when they watch a YouTube video and it's almost completely random as to when the system will fall over watching a YouTube video.

The totally legit copy of Metro Last Light that I have seems to enjoy blue screening when nothing else does with a higher OC as well.

I certainly think GPU overclocking is of much higher priority though. Much more in the way of performance gains real world, that is if you're under your target number of 60fps with certain visual features enabled in games. It doesn't always give you godly frame boosts, but can allow you to turn on a few extra details without compromising frame rate, or perhaps push your system further when you have a high refresh rate screen.

I agree for games GPU clocking. Shame mines pretty bad 7970 :(

I really hope you're being sarcastic xD Unless you're referring to the clocking. I have a 7950 and I'm pretty happy with it performance wise, but not in terms of temps. Haven't really found a max OC for this yet, haven't done much because I haven't felt the need to OC lol. This card can max out at about 80 though and the fan is making my ears bleed by this point.

Hoping to grab the top end Nvidia card next year, perhaps two of the slightly lower end ones - Want that driver dependency and long term support again although this 7950 was by far the best bang for my pound when I bought it.

Sorry should have said its just a very bad clocker. Mind you new setup perhaps I should give it a run out again :).

I seem to switch back and forth, between the brands although my last to GPU's before this was Nvidia.

Mmm I'm certainly not a hardcore fanboy, although I will say, I'll always go Nvidia in mobile because they seem to have much, much better drivers and tend to have more powerful chips.

I went AMD, Nvidia, AMD (5770, 560Ti - which was awful, 7950). I had a 6630M in my last laptop and a 650M in this one (650M because it's 11 inches xD).

What does annoy me about Nvidia is they tend to stick in less vRAM, which isn't good for future proofing or high resolutions and then charge more for the higher vRAM versions. AMD won it for me this generation simply in having 3GB vRAM with a 384-bit bus on a £240 card. It means if I ever wanted to mod games such as Skyrim or have a multi monitor setup with CFX I wouldn't need to worry at all about bus/vRAM limitations - While I'm sure the 680 would do fine, it cost considerably more than my GPU and even the 670 did at the time - The 660Ti at an equivelant price had a 192-bit bus and I'd heard about some serious choking with higher resolutions in SLI. After having a vRAM limit on my 560Ti I wanted to avoid the same again.

Shouldn't be as much of a concern with the 800 series I hope, highest end cards should both really have at least 3GB vRAM and a 384-bit bus, but there is no guarantee. I'll just wait and see what AMD come out with.

Anyway, back on topic ;)

Well, I said sod running p95 and I am just using it at 4.5ghz, will now see if my memory stays stable at 2100.

All seems ok, just been playing a few games and the temps are good around 58 maximum in game.

Will probably just have a lower profile for running anything that might crash like handbrake.

I was thinking about doing this. For 24/7 use I'm sat at 4.6GHz @1.27V which is handbrake/BF3 stable but I'm thinking that for flight simulator x have a dedicated profile (possibly with hyperthreading disabled). But then it's a lot of hassle for a relatively small gain of 200MHz. Also not sure if anyone else is on the UD3H but I've found the early bios' particularly F3 better for overclocking?

I just bought a 4770k running with my Noctua NH D14 and I'm getting idle/near idle temps about 2-3degC above mobo temp, so about 25degC CPU and 22degC mobo.

I'm using the Asus Suite software to give temps.

In Prime95 with auto-overclocking out of the box (not pressed any buttons to optimise etc) it's giving 3.7ghz at 1.168v and runs at 40degC or so. I could probably get the temps a bit lower but my fan profile is idling still at those temps.

Oh dear... I just suddenly saw the readout read 6700mhz haha... 180 x 37 or something. Just for a few seconds then it went back down to 3700mhz or so.

What are other people getting with the big Noctua coolers? It seems like I have a lot of overhead but then again this chip is meant to heat up quicker than the older ones.

Dave

Using an alpenfohn k2, at stock in games the max temp is 57c, idles in the high 20's - low 30's. Trying to setup an oc just now but it's having none of it.
