Stock i7 4770K or OC'ed i5 4670K?

Hi All,

I'm closing in on an upgrade decision with the help of some of you guys. Before I get down to RAM and motherboard specifics, I have a question about CPUs.

For pure gaming and the best future-proofing, which of the following wins?
"Quasar 240i" Intel Core i5 4670K @ 4.4GHz Overclocked Haswell Gaming PC Bundle

^^Guaranteed 4.4Ghz

Or

Self-build i7-4770K at stock (3.5Ghz), using a ~£100 Z87 board with stock cooling.

The cost seems around the same if I'm careful with the components. Is the i7 worth sacrificing those 0.9Ghz? I'm aware I could OC the i7 myself, and might attempt it later, but obviously how far I could go is a lottery. Would the i7 serve me better in the long run?

Thanks for reading,

DF

If they are about the same price then I'd just get the 4770K. More threads and you can always clock it yourself mildly to say 4GHz and the performance difference stock 4770K v 4.4GHz 4570K, per core, will not be noticeable in most situations.

I'd go for the i7 now and oc it yourself when you need to. Or you could get the i5 now and then sell it if you want and get the next gen i7 (Broadwell???) next year when it releases. Both are good choices and will last you for many years.

Cool - thanks for the suggestions! Is there much to decide between the motherboards around the £100 mark?

Also, the cooler would push me just over budget. Would I be okay on stock cooling for now until I decide to overclock? I assume the retail CPUs come with coolers, right?

I have always used Gigabyte so I tend to go with them.

The CPU is retail so comes with a stock cooler.

On the OCing front most mobo's these days have pre loaded profiles in the bios, you can select with one click. If nothing else it gives you a good place to start from.

Hmm...the Viper memory seems to have disappeared off the site.

Can anyone recommend a decent alternative for around the same price? Preferably low profile.

You will not notice much difference when gaming between any of those memories. Maybe 1-2fps one way or the other. And for this difference you pay the price difference between the 4670k and the 4770k.. :)

Benchmarks of course look cooler with faster and expensive memory.

Just a tip, order your memory TODAY if you can. The prices can skyrocket tomorrow or the day after due to the news of that big hynix plant exploding.

Will 1600Mhz restrict any overclocking potential?

Would these be suitable / any good?

TeamGroup Vulcan GOLD 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit

Sorry for the stupid questions. Memory is one thing I never got my head around (different types/speeds, etc.)

They would be fine but you wouldn't notice the speed increase at all. The only time speed affects gaming is when you are using the integrated graphics which i hope you aren't with an i7.

Also the memory in the Today Only offer should be good and cheap today as well.

...and ordered! Went for the daily deal RAM.

Didn't know about the plant explosion. Good timing all-round for me. The 4470K and board also went on the weekly sale today!

Thanks again for everyone's time - it's much appreciated.
