Some Guidance Needed

Hi all,

I have not bought a machine in a number of years as I mainly use a laptop. I was looking to get a tower but not really sure what to go for. I want a bit of an all rounder really. I will be using it for work as well as play. So for work I want something that is quick with multitasking various databases etc. On the personal side I would use it for films, music and games. As far as games go I play SWTOR and Football Manager at the moment. I would not need an overly brilliant graphics card but would like to have the flexibility in case I did play a slightly more graphics intensive game in the future.

When looking on the website obviously the sky is the limit when it comes to what you can spend. But there is no point me buying a top end machine if I don't need to.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of the sort of specs I should be looking at? Also what I will need to spend to cover myself here?

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome(even if you did register over a year ago:D)

The easiest thing for you to do is to tell us the total budget for this system and if you need a monitor, operating system, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc.

Thanks. It has taken me a while to get around to getting a the tower.

I do have a keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor with my old tower. Though they are now over 5 years old. So may be worth upgrading my monitor at least what do you think?

I will need an operating system is it worth going for windows 8? Not really sure of a budget but if I could get away with 500 -600 that would be great though can go over that if needed. Sorry I am a bit vague with it really not sure of what I need and don't need with my usage.

What size/resolution is the monitor you have?

You can download a 3 month trial of Windows8 (may even find 8.1 also from Microsoft) so you can try it then purchase it or Windows 7 after.

Thanks. That set up would cover me would it? Is it easily upgradeable if I wanted to make any improvements in say 12 months?

Its as good as you will get for the money I feel.

6 core CPU, good amount of RAM and a nice GFX card that will do what you want and also will play modern games at good settings.

You can add more RAM later on if you really need too.

You can add a SSD later on for the OS/programs to run from (then use the HDD for storage)

The board will take a FX8350 should one come up cheap in a few years time.

Thanks for the help.

How much would it cost to add and SSD. My mate says they are great but are they worth the extra cash or would I be better off spending the money elsewhere on this level of computer?

Also does that price you mention above include you guys building the machine for me or do i just get the components sent to me?

Would you recommend adding that SSD or spending that 90 quid elsewhere?
Can you guys build the machine for me? If so what is the cost?

Sorry to take up so much of your time and thanks for your patience.

Sorry Stulid one last question. If I was to drop the monitor for now and keep the SSD and change the case to one with USB 3.0, which would you go for?

Would it be that hard to put together myself?
