No iPhone 5S Pre-Order

So apparently you can't pre-order the 5S at all, and will have to wait until the 20th to either buy it online or queue up in store.

I wonder if this is genuinely down to stock concerns, or if it is just so they can have pictures of everyone queuing outside Apple stores pasted all over the news.

Is anyone here planning on getting one?

I am tempted to sell my 5 now while it still has some worth and then grab a 5S. However, iOS7 comes out next Wednesday so I feel that might give my 5 enough novelty again to put me off getting the 5S.

Thoughts/comments?

I thought this was pretty standard for iPhone releases?

It's the employees holiday they're using they can do what they like with it nevermind how daft it may seem to the rest of us.
 
No, you can usually pre-order one to have it delivered to your house for release day, just like you will be able to do with the 5C, which saves having to get into the silly queues.

I speculated exactly the same question as Blazin23 in the main thread. It's odd that they are doing preorders for the 5C but not the 5S. The extra time gives them more chance to generate stock, as we don't even know how long it will be after ordering online on the 20th you will get the phone, it could be another week.

But yeah, I also agreed that by having the high-street as the only way to get it on launch day means there will be huge queues and it will go down as a record launch and generate a huge amount of hype which Apple is all about.

You can pre-order online for delivery on release day from the 13th

You can't pre-order to pick up from store, if that's what you meant

Nope. You can pre-order the 5C from the 13th for delivery on the 20th, however you cannot do the same with the 5S.

I queued up outside O2 once the day the iPhone 4 came out and felt like such a loser I swore I would never do it again.

The only good thing to come out of it was when someone pulled up, beeped their horn and showed us their boxed iPhone out the window then put their finger up and drove off. Couldn't stop laughing.

If you want one why not just order it online on the 20th. Is it really that important to have it on the day of release? Or is that concept apocalyptic to some?

This, but that was mainly because it was such a farce. Systems went down or ran so slowly that it took 10x as long as it should for someone to walk in and buy a phone. I was 7th in line, I still had to wait 2 hours to get my phone because people in front couldn't order due to systems running slowly
 
I just personally find it really embarrassing. I get that some people have the day off work etc so why not but it's not something I will ever do again.

I didn't get one in the end because they sold out and the team of O2 cretins didn't have the brain cells between them to inform us there was limited stock given the size of the queue. That's not the reason I'm put off queuing though, I've explained that above.
 
Their stuff gets delivered quickly so even if you order on the 20th you'll only have to be without your new toy for a few days... as long as you're quick off the bat ordering as soon as they appear online.

Again - I could understand if it was the PS4 or something sociable but it's a phone. Absolutely no one, not your friends, not your parents, not your cat, is going to give a rat's ass that you have an iPhone 5S on the day of release, if at all :p
 
We don't get it in Belgium until December hehe so don't be annoyed if you can't pre-order it for end Sept ;)
 
I'll be tempted to go down and queue for it the night before, but alas I'll sleep in my warm comfortable bed and order it as soon as it's up on the Apple Store :).
 
The preorder delay for the 5S is presumably to push people towards carrier contracts, which I imagine will be up in the next couple of days.

Carriers have a vested interest in this release given it's proximity to 4G launches, so they'll use the phone's release to upsell existing 3G contracts to 4G.

That's how I see it anyway.
