Phonebloks -compartmentally upgradable phone

This idea will probably be too expensive.

We also don't just throw phones away. Smartphones these days are worth a lot used and are recycled.

I'm not convinced these people know how electronic devices are constructed and interconnected.

That's what i was thinking. All these swappable parts from different manufacturers? Even if it did somehow connect together, all that would happen is DRIVER NOT FOUND

Well that and PCB trace lengths and signal integrity. And the inability to put components on top of each other. I also think trying to do the battery as a block would get you a smaller battery than most phones have today.

Cool concept but I doubt it will work.

Yeh, the first smartphone I ever bought is still being used by my mum. I'd guess that out of the total electronics waste, smartphones are quite a small portion.

Beside, researchers are already developing bacteria that can digest and extract metals from electronic waste. So hopefully the impact of throwing away complex electronic components will be lessened.

Love the idea amd would love one.
But they would need to create a hole new raft of expandable, future proof standards, so everything would work together and over many upgrades.
Great idea, but it wont get the huge company support needed.

So where do the old bloks end up? Are they magicked away by eco-fairies?

You being thick on purpose?
Waste an entire phone, or a small compponent of said phone? What do you think creates more waste.
Have you ever tried takinga modern pphoone to bit to replace screen etc. they arent deign to be easy.

Then as a customer, would you rather buy a whole new phone or just a better compponent. I know what I would prefer to do. It also means you dont have to have a phone deisgned for the average joe. You can customise it how you want.

Who do you think produces more electronic waste - someone who buys an Apple laptop (with no user serviceable parts) and replaces in in 5 years or someone who buys a modular desktop PC and regularly upgrades/replaces components?

No need to the rather ironic 'thick' insult either. I don't beleive this is great for sustainability nor do I think it is a viable product.

Another stupid statement.
Do they upgrade every year, what happens to the apple laptop, what happens to the modular parts?
Such a stupid statement its unbelievable, why did you pull 5 years out of a cess pit.

Ive already said i don't think its viable as you would need to create a whole new raft of forward compatible standards.

I love this idea! I would definitely consider this if it ever sees the light of day.

I couldnt give a **** about the reduction of waste argument, i like it for the modularity and upgrade possibilities, if this gains momentum the possibilities are huge.

This idea is so over simplified it hurts. It's soo much more complicated than this.

Will never catch on.

Phones can't be this modular - everything is so tightly integrated to save space and make it battery efficient.
