Converting in order to marry a Muslim girl.

OP, I think it depends on where she is on the religion scale. You get Muslims who are quite liberal. They'll attend the 5 prayers, cover their hair (but show their face fully) and probably have some of the contraband food/drink. Then you have the fundamentalists who treat Islam as as law as well as being a religion, taking the Quran as gospel. The same goes with Christians. You have liberals that enjoy a good banter and will talk just about anything (and swear!), then you have the evangelicals / born-agains who will repeatedly try and convert the living daylights out of you, and condemn you for the fact that you go out clubbing, like what most 20-somethings do.

So yeah, if she's liberal, then I don't think you'll have much of a problem. Love > religion IMO. Fundamentalist = run for the hills.

A fundamentalist or devout muslim wouldn't even be with him in the first place. The cream of the crop aren't for any tom, dick and harry you know :D

wow I thought I would be answering specific people when I see this thread again but I guess its not something shocking given the popularity of OCUK. Whether serious or not so, thanks for the responses guys! Some of you make her seem like a Saudi Arabian import or something like that but religion hardly comes up. Talks of marriage starts to creep up because she eventually wants children and would definitely not have them just as a couple. The rule comes neither from her, definitely not her parents (they lived mostly in Soviet times and people then knew their religion only on paper) but she is somehow scared to ignore it.

I have met enough Turkish people to see that you can be a Muslim and not practise your religion at all (including eating pork or drinking alcohol). What rather worries me is some other funny little rule that I may be missing but could make me go "hell no!" when it might be too late.

Christians have the missionary position.
what do muslims have

BTW you can beat her with a stick as long as it is no wider than your thumb afaik

So no one actually wants you to convert, she's just worried over nothing?

Is this real life?

it absolutely depends on whether its a piece of paper or real life
establish exactly what you have to do, sounds as if it could indeed be more box ticking than way of life :)

the religion does have double standards for sure

and guys..stop talking about bacon!!
and the picture was lol!

funny rule? From someone who doesn't practise their religion and the decision is neither from her or her parents.
Is this thread a joke?

I know someone who has converted to marry a Pakistani girl, still eats bacon, drinks alcohol etc - so does his wife and kids. His immediate in-laws aren't too bothered about it but he does "halal" the house every time his extended family comes down from the north i.e. stores all his wine with a neighbour, chucks any pork products in the fridge.

Personally I wouldn't betray my own religion and culture though.

Oh hell no, no way I'm picking up my pork products up off the floor and putting them in the fridge :p:confused:

On a serious note, this kinda winds me up. If God / Allah / blah is real, anyone who converts just to shack up with a bird is surely screwed? I've been in this situation with a Christian, and long story short, I told her to do one [/Bloke].

Agreed, those last statements make the whole thing quite bizzare

if you don't belive what you're really asking is "should i pretend to be a Muslim to marry a Muslim girl"

Most Muslims I know tend to break some rules... don't drink alcohol but still smokes weed and shags about with girls... says gambling is bad but still spread bets FX... mostly eats halal but doesn't bother with islamic banking...

People pick and choose the rules as they go along anyway... you might as well just choose to obey none of them... just say you're a muslim/believe in the magic sky pixie - it hardly matters if you're not a big believer in the first place and so willing to entertain this idea - tis good she's fairly chilled about it anyway and doesn't really follow it much... I mean can you get away without having to do all that Ramadan nonsense (alternatively you can probs get breakfast and lunch at work)? Presumably as long as you can say you're 'muslim' to the parents, have a muslim wedding and they can tell their friends and their side of the family that you are a muslim too then not much of an issue. You just become another 'Muslim' who doesn't follow all the rules... or in your case pretty much ignores every single one of them.
