Steam reveal

I'd forgotten about this announcement till about 10 mins ago. Popped onto the page and the reveal was set for 9 seconds and counting :)

Will be interesting to see how the Streaming to TV option works.

I wonder if further announcements are specific to the living room, or is there a chance they will announce a game. I suspect the former as it's all under the /livingroom/ URL

Small Linux PC that locks me into steam for games which because there are few games for Linux (and lets be honest, is unlikely to be many for the foreseeable future) then does a terminal server type session to stream windows games from you PC along with the associated lag... Meh

I can't see many publishers wanting to support yet another OS, and a closed system fork of Linux locked to Steam at that outside of the occasion headline grabbing one off deal. I could be wrong though.

I would rather play PC games on the PC and use a proper console for TV console type games tbh. A PC under the TV has never really worked well for me, PC games (and their strength for me) is mouse and keyboard which even with wireless really just doesn't work well for me on a couch although to be fair I've never really got on with even the xbox controller for PC games.

How they think this is going to take on PS4, Xbox and Wii U is a mystery, I can only think they're starting to believe their own publicity. Seems an effective way of throwing money away in an attempt to lock people into Steam to me.

Don't really see this taking off.

I could have a PC with SteamOS under my TV, which means it will (presumably) only be good for gaming and only with games from Valve or I could get one and install Windows 8 on it for the sake of £100 and have a fully functional OS that will play any games, go online, act as a media center, do some work if needed etc.

I just don't see the market for it really, who really sits down and thinks 'I really like my gaming PC but if only it could do less and be more restricted to Valve?'

Indeed, lets face it, any Steam PC under the TV capable of throwing AAA title graphics around at 1080p is unlikely to be particularly competitive priced compared to a dedicated console. Any lower spec and what's the point of having one?

well I kind of do, my laptop handles all the productivity I can throw at it - so gaming is down to a PC hooked into the TV and an xbox pad.

Well, that's disappointing. "Hey why not just remove everything on your PC apart from steam? Just to remind you, we like money."

2 announcements remaining, lets hope it gets better.

But given about the only advantage so far would potentially be less overhead from Windows, I just don't see the appeal.

Less functionality, smaller range of games. Excellent, just what I always wanted from a gaming machine :p

Indeed, lets face it - it's not like the average gaming PC is exactly bogged down by Windows these days. I'm yet to see any real world comparisons that suggest an identical game on identical hardware is noticeably faster on Linux and there's some stonking Linux builds out there.

Do work?

As for "go online" and a media center, it will probably have that as well.

Lookign at the symbols on the site I assume the second reveal is a steam box and the third is some kind of combined Steam OS on Steambox subscription type thing maybe? Hmmm... we have a couple of hours by the look of it, any guesses? What could option 3 be?

First reveal OS, then hardware (steambox) then launching titles (with a tiny chance of hl3 perhaps?)

Anyways, it's a decent plan.

The only reason I got steam in the first place was hl2, I suppose they will "force" consumers into their product again with similar tactic.

for new games that are made especially for it, it could be good. but you can't ignore all the legacy games that people play. streaming it from another pc isn't a proper solution. and for that reason, i'm out. :p
