If given the option.

An iPhone 5 64GB Blk (like new)

An iPhone 5S 16GB Space Grey (NIB)

I want to treat my missus to a new phone.

She's not really into phones as such, but after handling my 5 / 5S, she did mention that her 4S felt really heavy and clunky.

The 5S. It is for your missus and will get you good boy points too ;)

She probably may not notice any difference between the 5 & 5S though. No offence meant there pal.

Surely this is a question only you/she can answer? If you need the space, you'd have to go for the older model, if you don't, you'd go for the newer model as a matter of common sense?

An extra year of support and better performance in the future vs. more storage if required.

I know its a tough one.. Which is why i come to you OcUK, to seek guidance in my decision.

No she's not a space hog. I did have to move her pics to her laptop to get her on iOS7, but she's not exactly an app loaded girl.

Oh the decisions, decisions. Hence, the what would you take?

The 5 is worth £260 -- the 5S is £549. If you are getting them both for the same price, then without a doubt, the 5S (the space issue can be easily managed).

I don't know where you're getting that price from, even the 16GB is selling for far more than that. As for space easily being managed, it depends on usage patterns, what the space is being used for, and the user themselves - somebody who is a huge gamer may have several large games going at once, making management of space impossible.

Apologies if my reply came across as a bit harsh BTW, wasn't meant to!

How often does she upgrade? To be honest sounds like the 5S and taking off some of the old unwanted stuff should be OK. No point going for a 64GB device purely because there is a hair over 14GB of data on it!

The biggest downside to iPhone prices, is that 16, 32 and 64GB models all have almost identical resale values. So you pay £160 more (currently the difference between a 16 and a 64 5S), but when it comes to sell it, you might get £10 or £20 more. That's a REALLY bad investment.

I'd take a 5S as I don't really use the storage, minimal apps and Spotify, so yeah. Will she need the extra space of the 5?

O2 Recycle are pretty consistently the highest you can get for recycling iPhones. Yes, you can get more on eBay, maybe, but after fees, and dealing with time wasters, plus the time required to actually list it, answer questions, etc., I prefer to sell to the recyclers, every time.

But you'll never actually pay that price for a used phone. A phone recycler is always going to pay you less, in the same way that part-exchanging your car will always get you a very low price.

I'd go for the 5S, as if she is as decribed, then she won't probably have any use for the 64GB storage.

Another thing, when you sell to the recyclers, you send the bare phone. When you sell on eBay, you have to sell with box, charger, cable, headphones, etc. A new charger and cable are £30 (£15 each I think), and I can never have enough chargers and cables (although obviously the 5 onwards requires the new cable, making the old cables useless).

On eBay, completed listings for a 64GB iPhone 5 are selling for between £350 and £400, so let's use the average of £375, minus the 10% eBay fee is £337.50, minus Paypal fees (? no idea how much, and by the way, who I hate with a white-hot heat). Minus the use of the charger and cable (let's say £20) and we're down to £317.50 (without taking anything off for Paypal). So ok, I agree it is still more than what the recyclers will pay, but this is assuming you are lucky and get a good price, you don't have any timewasters (let alone someone who is out to scam you -- e.g. buy the item, and then instantly place a claim, freezing your funds, etc). For £50 (in the case of the 64GB 5 which is obviously at the top of the heap), and much less for lesser models, selling direct is just not worth the hassle, in my opinion.

I wish there were recyclers for other things like computers (I have too many lying around the house because I can't steel myself to deal with the countless a-holes that are on eBay).

You don't necessarily have to sell through eBay, though of course I do get your point. As I said, a phone recycler will still give you less, though how much will vary. Other option is a trader like Cex (I'm selling my N4 through them because £20 here and there doesn't make too much of a difference). However, my point was more that regardless of sale price, you can't buy an iPhone 5 in decent nick for £260.

Now I get your point (sorry for being so obtuse). You were talking about someone buying either of those phones, then of course you are right, you can't buy a 5 for £260.

However, the implication I got from the OP was that these devices were somehow "given", i.e. cost was not mentioned. And that was my point of view: re-sale value, i.e. if someone offers to give you one of two things (excluding the case of sentimental value), you pick the one you can sell for the most money.

Really comes down to how much storage you need. A second hand Iphone 5 64gb will likely set you back £350 to £400, which is still £149 less than a new 16gb 5S so a cost saving as well.
I can't bear the thought of 16gb anymore, my 64gb one has 18gb free and i have my entire music collection podcasts all the photos and videos I have taken pretty much since my first 3G as well as a lot of games, couldn't do that on a 16gb one.

Speed wise there isn't a big difference between them in day to day apps some new games will probably make a difference and the 5s will age a bit better than the 5 from that aspect. I am waiting on the 6 and hopefully a bigger screen, you could always get her a second hand 5 16gb one and save even more money!

Well i ended up giving her the 5S and selling my 5. Plus treated her to an official apple iphone 5s leather case.. She's happy, and even expressed her joy via the bedroom come Sat night... :) So well worth the effort.

I sold my iPhone 5 64gb, unlocked, like new (with untouched ear pods, cable, lightening cable, box) for $450 cash, from the free local classifieds. It was an easy sell. Listed in the AM sold by the end of the morning. Could have even got more if I waited. My new 5S 64gb cost me $399 (/w contract)
